The replacement is much better- significantly faster to do everything, gps track is better, satellite acquisition is now almost instant. It is honestly like a different watch.
Vs the Fenix 3, I read the DC Rainmaker review of it, intending on upgrading- but was a bit underwhelmed. The 3 does do new stuff- support for apps, in particular, but you seem to lose a lot of stuff as well. Although I would think you could just add that back in an app at a time.
I also feel that I was possibly unwise in getting the Fenix II the moment it came out- early software and, I suspect in my case, not fully resolved hardware.
This means I am very wary of getting the III this close to its launch.
Final thing however- I ordered the BSX Insight gadget in November last year, still no sign of it BUT- the III could/should/might offer an app to connect to it, which the II won't. But I'll wait and see on that.
For now, I would get the II.

I'm pretty set on the Fenix 3 to replace my Forerunner when it gives up, but not before. Hopefully by then it'll have dropped a bit in price.Want to wait for the Connect IQ bugs to get ironed out too (assuming there will be some).

Having used a 920 a couple of weeks ago i'm very tempted, i love the mobile upload capability, and all the extra vector data the latest round of computers is delivering would be nice, but it seems like watches are about to make a decent leap forward with apple entering the market, so i'm going to hang back for 6 months or so to see what happens...
3x15 minutes at threshold this evening was pretty tough given how tight my ITB is on my right leg from yesterdays long run, but despite thinking i'd have to bail after the second rep i pushed on and made it through, lots of stretching needs to happen before Fridays long run, oh and the other two swims, one strength and one triple brick session i have to get in before then!

Newport, short.

That's going to upset a few mates of mine, they all got 2-3 minute pb's and although they all suspected it was short they all thought more like 100 metres.
My training has gone completely tits up, day after my 20 mile race last week I came down with a cold. I now suspect the strange ache I had in my legs that day was the start of the cold.
Back running again now but I think my slim chance of sub 3 has now gone, I'm still going to try but I suspect it's more likely to be a frustratingly close 3:03 ish now.

The 920xt for all its fancey Connectivity, metrics etc.
Is simply a far nicer unit to use, then anything I've used in the past.

The big selling feature of the Fenix2 seems to be the onboard hunting & fishing calendar.
What are the charging / transfer procedures for the 920xt and Fenix models?
-
• #10910
I'm always dubious of those comparison charts, especially when they say things like the Fenix II isn't compatible with third party ANT+ power meters (doesn't Dammit use theirs with a PowerTap hub?)
If I was buying now (for adventures into slvlss) it'd be the 920xt but I won't make any purchase for at least 6 months and everything could change in that time.

My 920xt transfers automatically whenever it is within range of one of 4 preset WiFi signals.
You can also do this via Your Phones internet connection and via Bluetooth smart. But my Phones being a twat about that.
Charging is much like the 910xt. Except the charger Connects much more securely.
I downloaded a Nice watch face for it, and use it as an everyday watch at the moment.
One thing to note vs the 910xt. Is that the screen is 1000 times more readable under water. So you can glance at it while Your hand passes Your face mid lap. If I try to turn in a pool and look at my watch out of the water at the same time. I'd drown.

I've used mine with an SRM, a P2M and a Powertap.
It is of course the Fishing functionality which I value the most.

one of 4 preset WiFi signals
So you don't have to rely on shonky Ant+?
I sense an upgrade coming on...

FTP = Fishing Threshold Perch.

So the fishing stuff only works with Shimano right?
-
• #10916
It literally takes Seconds to upload too.
On paper it doesnt really sell itself over the 910xt. But after I played With one for a while I was sold on it. Much more user friendly.
The recovery time Notifications are funny though. I keep finishing a ride, and am shifting into my running shoes just as it beeps to tell me to rest for 24 hours.
-
• #10917
I think it means you shouldnt attempt another hard effort for 24 hours not that you cant do anything.
the recovery check after a mile is more telling. the only 2 times it ever said poor I was barely able to keep moving my feet and I quite happily threw in the towel there and then and walked home I was so fucked.

Another tip:-
Don't get the train in instead of running.
At least i'll be fresh for 5-a-side tonight.
No excuses for Friday training day now. Think I'll do a long swim/run brick.
But I will get the train in on Tuesdays during Easter Holidays (on childcare duty Mon/Wed/Fri), that way I can run back home once I've dumped stuff at work, and then run in on a Thursday.

Mine just says 'good' no matter what. Since I started a bit of sleeveless trainnig, I've started runs in an horrible state. Last night I was a stumbling zombie after completing some nasty bike Climb repeats. A km into the following run, and my Garmin seemed to think all was well.
I use the recovery time as an Instant suffer score. Think 36 hours is my best achievement so far.

Bricks sessions are fun.
When I slvlssed, all of my run PBs used to be off the bike.
Biking off swims, though, can GTF. The first five minutes are always spent fighting for oxygen, and the next 30 minutes are puking over my left shoulder.

I ran the first km at 5:00min/km. Which it what I would have done fresh. Just felt broken legged.
The only time I did a swim - ride brick. It took 15mins to get changed and onto the bike. So I felt OK. Was tempted to sneak in a sauna. Bet the scandis have those in tris anyway.
@Dammit are you happy with your Fenix II now? I'm looking at buying one. Struggling to understand the difference between Fenix II and III - is it juts looks?
