That it fits on the outside of a triple without gaps, is 1/8, 34t and silver without being ugly or expensive.

Are the Surly rings prone to folding?
I've recently fitted one (38t, 130bcd).

What's your chainline?

Only if not properly bolted.

No problems with the 4-5 I've used.

Currently 46mm but when I build my new wheels 53.5mm

Cool.
It's wasn't exactly cheap.

I've had a 33t 4-bolt steel Surly ring on my singlespeed Inbred for about two years now, it's still going strong.
I could put my engineer's hat on and come up with some numbers but I think my personal opinion is that they are 'stiff enough', and any folding is probably attributable to user error (funny chainline, incorrect/loose chainring bolts, previously bending it in a crash and not noticing).

I've been using a Surly ring for ages, never any problems.

A day out with Charlie, which not the whole cause but was a factor in a trip to hospital.
The Niner SIR9 in foreground and a geared Salsa with Charlie which was crashed soon after.
I got the Monkey as the Niner was very nice (853 Reynolds) but a bit delicate, the Karate Monkey is more of bare knuckle fighter and can take some hits.........Niner was nice though.

Good to see I'm not alone in using Surly stuff in a way other then it was intended to be used.
Case in point, tonight, bmx race track, Surly Krampus fork is definitely not a dj fork but does a great impression of one!

What's it like, taking a big-wheeler around the BMX track?
Asking for a friend, obvsly....

Equal parts of,
Hilarious
Hard work
PetrifyingCereally though, it handled it pretty well. I was way under geared but I kind of expected that.
Not as easy to let the larger bike rise up under me so was getting air off of everything whereas when I've ridden it on a bmx it's much easier to stick to the ground and get the power down for the next bit. Part of that could always be due to my bike being a lot lighter than the hire bmxes though.
Think I'll take my Surly next week.

Hmm....
*starts researching 26" wheel BMXs *

Is there such a thing as a 26" bmx ? i thought for racing you had the 20" and 24" cruiser classes, something i looked into several years ago as i hate the little wheelers because i can't ride them :)
For a playbike the proper 4X race bikes/frames are worth looking into. The only people i knew who did bmx, raced and had the proper bike, everyone else used a dirt jumper with a lighter build on parts or a 4X bike.

I think they're also classed as 'cruisers' like this one.

I've already got those pedals ^. Might as well get the rest of the bits... right?

Right.

^ Liking the Saint cranks. I just ordered some of those for my new build :-)
Thankfully there are several 104bcd rings that don't do that on a regular basis without resorting to weird BBs...
You can get fancy bashguards too...
