I ovalised a Surly ring in one ride, the first ride on my SSMTB. I thought the EBB had moved, didn't realise the extra chain slack was loose chainring bolts.
I blame Keep Pedalling for not letting me fit the chainring he'd just sold me inside the shop, had to do it out on the street.

Thankfully there are several 104bcd rings that don't do that on a regular basis without resorting to weird BBs...
You can get fancy bashguards too...
