Damaged aluminum frame- still safe to ride?

Posted on
  • I locked my bike outside my flat in Waterloo and a few opportunists tried to steal it. I had it locked up with a steel chain [1], and I guess it appeared breakable to them, so they pulled out my seat post, stuck it in the lock, and started twisting. They couldn't break the chain, but they wrecked the seat post and my front wheel (lock was through front wheel + frame). They also did some damage to the (aluminum) frame. There are no cracks in the frame, but there are a number of dents, including a few creased dents on the down tube. Pictures: https://imgur.com/YkLqpA1,XVo8Zwz,gs3scRN,hcPDK8r,psMh8Pk,0GBSBSO,nA6koZp

Now, I'm moving back to Canada in mid-July, so I'm debating riding this frame for the next three months and then throwing it out when I leave. I'll just be commuting with it and doing some longer training rides, nothing too intense.

Is that safe? Or am I taking my life in my hands by riding on the frame?

  • I could only see one piccy of the downtube, that looked pretty bad.
Sensible choice and not seeing the rest of the damage is bin it, on-one have some cheap alu road frames on sale so a new frame could be had cheaply.

On the other hand, leaving the UK shortly anyway....... but without seeing the whole damage, i might go for sensible commuting only, no kerb hopping or sprinting, forget long training rides, just pootle to work and back again and keep an eye open for cracks, thats assuming the frame isn't bent and tracks straight.

Would be safer to get a budget frame replacement.

  • that looks pretty bad, it could well be fine, but it could also crumple. i wouldn't touch it.

this sounds like a good idea

Would be safer to get a budget frame replacement.

  • Thanks, that's what I was afraid of. I'll start looking for a replacement. Probably just get a cheap beater...

  • Middle part of a downtube doesn't see a whole lot of things going on, its usually pretty much just in simple strain. Depending how exotic the frame material is whether i'd ride it or not, if its pretty beefy then I'd ride it but check on it once a week, if its mad light and felt like it was barely strong enough to hold itself up in the first place then you have your answer.

This type of failed theft damage really pisses me off and I'm seeing more and more of it.

  • Bin it. Any insurance? Might be worth checking with your contents policy.

  • buy a cheap frame, cheaper than dental work.

  • Insurance explicitly doesn't cover bikes, I'm afraid... Shitty student insurance.

  • You know, that's an excellent point.
