I definitely recommend doing it on a non-mass organised day.
Hard for anyone to give you gear ratio advice if they don't know you! My current set up is 46-17 and it'll go up Ditchling fine for me. But even if you have to walk or take a break on the climb, it's just one hill and it's more important to be in a nice gear for the whole ride.I can't read david's .gpx file or zoom in on the strava map for some reason. But i agree that there is a nicer route that the BHF one and i expect david's is similar to the one i know. If you'd like a text description let me know. No doubt the mapmyride and googlemaps versions are kicking around on here.
im thinking later this summertime I want to ride this route but can never be assed to do it official so am currently looking for best/known route. Gonna be doing it fixed so advice on gearing would be appreciated at the mo. riding 46-17. Its definitely not gonna be race pace hopefully involving pub stops enroute with a bit luck.
Cheers
