Rocket Rons blowing off rim

Posted on
  • Got a pair of new wired RRs 700 x 35c off eBay this morning. Fitted then to 19mm wide rims (SSCX bike) to replace a set of Maxxis 32mm tyres, and one of them has blown off a couple of times, exploding inner tube once.
Have replaced the tube with a new one (32-38mm) Continental, so no concerns there.

Had a bit of trouble fitting them, as they seemed rather loose. One still doesn't seem to seat very well.
Never had an issue like this before.

    1. Are the tyres too wide for the rims?
    2. Are the tyres damaged (stretched bead? They were folded rather tightly in the package) Tyre spec is 28/622 (definitely not 635 according to sidewall)
    3. The tyres were a good deal - hoping not too good a deal. Never heard of fake/faulty bike tyres, but you never know (seller has very good feedback)
    4. Will I die? So far not ridden, for obvious reasons

  • Thought someone had fired a gun!

  • 19mm internal or external width: former is good to go, latter is "u mad bro".

  • Have a feeling that's the problem. Not got a micrometer but they're definitely less than 19mm Internal

    Bugger

  • This is Tester's tyre/rim table, based on Sheldon's: this shows ideal combinations, where as Sheldon's shows what will work.

Sheldon notes that his is cautious, so you have some leeway, but if your rims are 19mm external I'd say that's too much.

  • Thanks for that - Checked the gospel according to Mr. Brown when it first happened, it reckoned it was borderline, but plays safe as you say.

Usually have to push a bit to get new tyres on to rims, these just fell over without any effort, hence I was worried the beads were stretched/ OD of tyre too large.

I have run tyres happily on a MTB which were supposedly too wide without any problems in the past.

  • As you said, they were packed pretty tight: it is possible to fold wire bead tyres, but it's tricky and easy to crease the bead...

  • There's not a lot of wiggle room there and if you only have the bead unseated on only a fraction of the rim it'll pop.

  • Thanks both. Tried on a wider rim I have lying around, so far not popped, but the bead still doesn't seat very well.
Tyres back on eBay later 😄
Fitted the Maxxis tyres back on (never had a issue, 32mm profile) and will stick with this size max for these rims.
