I wouldnt update to anything other than 5.1, and even then you'll get worse battery I'm guessing. You can ALWAYS do a factory reset to get back to a clean KK phone. You'll lose your photos and contacts and crap so make sure its backed up. You'll also have to update and reinstall the apps through the Play store.
Turning off WiFi scanning, GPS and NFC until you need them saves a lot of battery.
People will always be all over the place with android and battery because 1 - there's no apple koolaid type culture and 2 - there are many different users and phones.
For example my Nexus 5 lasts easily 1.5 or 2 days, while others complain about it dying in 12 hours. But I always install completely clean systems when I update... I never save my app data other than contacts and google drive stuff. I don't run shitty store apps and I freeze any system apps I don't use. And I turn off battery hogging hardware when not in use.
