  • Head north until you hit Oxford Street or Uxbridge Road. Ride west.

  • I can see myself ending up on the Westway while not fully awake...

  • That also works. I've ridden that a few times and it's a bit grim but early morning is probably ok.

(if you die, you didn't read it here)

  • Maybe I should just drive. Not keen on dying.

  • Where South are you? I am riding out from Lewisham meeting with @arup near Elephant. I am keen to avoid Uxbridge Road so following the route below

Old Kent Road down to Elephant
    Westminster Bridge
    Bird Cage Walk
    Constitution Hill
    Hyde Park
Paddington following canal to Perivale Wood
    Northolt
    Eastcote
    Ruislip

  • Brixton Hill so could feasibly meet along the way. I'm waiting to hear from several club mates who may or may not be heading the same way, so might be possible to get small peloton going.
Though as I have car + bike rack I may also get talked into easy option, but I would like to get my mileage up (also aiming to do my first 300 next month), so idea of cycling there quite appealing.

  • You are welcome to join, we will probably be meeting out the front of IWM at 5:30am, so we have enough time to get there and have breakfast before the start.

  • That sounds good - am just waiting to hear from other people, but like the idea of early start and not having to rush too much. Will let you know for definite shortly.

  • I've seen it do 18 hours, although Garmin say it does 14. The 800 is the opposite, Garmin say '15 hours typical', I would say typically less, although mine is getting on a bit so the battery has had some use.

See my posts in p51 of the 'Your Garmin help, pls' thread:
    https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/185085/?offset=1250#10226987

Some 800's seem to be OK with more than 250-300km, some don't. Mine isn't :/

I do agree on turn by turn, I also really like having an altimeter which the 200 doesn't have. I've generally been very happy with my 800. But lots of people just follow the line and seem to be fine. I'm not sure I would be though, I am like you in that a Garmin basically makes events like this doable for me, otherwise the navigation would be too much of a pain in the arse.

  • I've definitely got > 13hrs out of my 800 without external power.

    What firmware is yours?

  • hey I will be cycling from wandsworth if want to tag along?

  • I'm out. Too much weather forecast.

  • I am avoiding whichever weather forecast you are looking at.

  • I reckon I'm up for cycling there if you don't mind me tagging along.
Possibly back as well, though might just get the train if I'm really tired.

An optimistic reading of the weather forecast for Sunday suggests nothing worse than 'Occasional light showers'. Which I'll take over the 100k of headwinds on the Kennet valley run last weekend (though the subsequent 100k of tailwinds were good).

  • So I am on a Lynskey, probably in a purple long sleeve Jersey. Say Hello if you see me

  • I'm meeting @mustardbeak at the IWM just after Elephant & Castle at 0530 then we'll follow the route that he's devised. May be easier for you to join us at Hyde Park rather than go East to start.

  • Isolated showers. May be ok on the day. I'm going to proceed as though I'm doing it. Having survived the freezing cold Willy Warmer in January I feel ready for anything.

  • hey
Is IWM short for imperial war museum. if so 5.30 met would be grand.

  • I am going to chance the weather and not bother with a jacket. Can't be any worse than the hours of rain on the Anfractuous where I had to find a shop to buy more clothes as I was so wet, cold and miserable.

  • I had to find a shop to buy more clothes as I was so wet, cold and miserable

I like it. You earned 5 man points for riding in such shite.
I deducted 5 because you had to stop and buy clothes, obviously ;)

  • My only jacket is a hardshell. I am regretting not having a lighter jacket now.

I guess that I need to take a lock with me? I am probably want to go and have a pie in a pub aren't I?

  • Haha I also failed as I used a bike shop and paid full wack, couple of guys I met later smartly went to a charity shop and bought cheaply!

  • Whenever I have carried a lock on an Audax I haven't used it. The pub control in Oxford was the only place I could have done with one last time but it was so busy I pushed on to somewhere quieter anyway.

  • I have a small, very cheap and likely able-to-be-cut-with-scissors cable lock for stops when the bike might be briefly out of sight.

  • I have a small length of chain that I bought from a hardware shop covered in an old piece of inner tube with a shed padlock. Kind of heavy and have carried it but only used it once on a DIY.
