What would those of you without locks do if you had a mechanical failure that makes your bike unrollable? Carry it home?
Get it to a nearby bike shop (if there's one open), or to work, or back home.
How? By train or tube if it's not at peak time, and to get to/from the station might need a black cab (if it's way too far to carry).
I've had mixed results trying to flag down a black cab with a bike, a few will drive past but eventually one will stop.
When I was doing the nursery run I used to carry a lock when commuting so that I could, if necessary, lock it up wherever I was and race to collect my daughter in time.
