I've seen it do 18 hours, although Garmin say it does 14. The 800 is the opposite, Garmin say '15 hours typical', I would say typically less, although mine is getting on a bit so the battery has had some use.
Some 800's seem to be OK with more than 250-300km, some don't. Mine isn't :/
I do agree on turn by turn, I also really like having an altimeter which the 200 doesn't have. I've generally been very happy with my 800. But lots of people just follow the line and seem to be fine. I'm not sure I would be though, I am like you in that a Garmin basically makes events like this doable for me, otherwise the navigation would be too much of a pain in the arse.
