  • Good shout Umbopsiden, I've got these in mind now:

    • XTR with Stans Grail
    • DT Swiss 240S-Centrelock with Flo30

Which of those for a disc-braked road bike?

  • I've been an idiot and not read centre-lock, so yeah, WI's is all I can think of too

  • Umbopsiden

    I like that

  • Dt swiss is far nicer build. And more money.

Ignore the grail and go for hed Belgium.

  • Gone for DT Swiss/Flo30

  • HMRC approved.

  • Weight weenie clearly no more.

  • Sensibilicious

  • Not my bike/wheels

  • Talking of disc builds; any experience of the Pacenti SL25 here?

  • The 23 was famous for a very challenging tyre mount. Get HED Ardennes. Why save £100 when you spend a few grand on the bike. Considering as well that you will not wear the rim?

  • The rims themselves are so-so, made by Sun-Ringle. Their size makes them fairly easy to build, however they're not quite as round as the Hed/H Plus Son/Velocity (gasp!) et al. The weight is OK, however one can save a bit by sticking with the SL23s. Those are already wide enough as to be fairly aerodynamic with a 23c tire, so going even bigger seems superfluous.

Beware of early ones, which had an awful propensity to crack at the spoke holes. Mounting tires is fairly tough, but manageable with good technique and strong thumbs.

  • They're great runs, very light for the price too, and surprisingly easy to mount tyres on as well.

Have it on the tourer with 5,000 miles clocked.

  • Interesting. Thanks chaps. @BO2 where's that info from?

  • 25mm Open Corsas did a bit of rolling in corners this morning on my superstar rims. Have ordered a set of 23mm Schwalbe Ones. Other than that the wheels are great, very quick and not too bad at all in a side-wind, of which there was plenty today.

  • @dave4 I've built a lot of them personally :). To make tyre mounting easier, stay far away from Velox tape - use the thinnest rim strip you can find, ideally just tubeless tape without valves.

  • First ride on archetypes today - seem nice, if a bit heavy.

Only negative thing - braking. Are they always this grabby? Also, front rim squeals/judders horribly when being feathered. Is that normal?

  • Should have bought Ardennes.

  • £100 rims which are a pain in the arse to get hold of and unavailable in 32h - for winter and commuting? Yeah, seems really sensible.

  • They haven't got some sort of manufacturing residue on the brake track have they?

  • ^^ Shut up Princess. I'm looking for information here, not smart arse responses — I have WhatsApp for that.

  • They have anodised brake surfaces - will wear off in the rain most likely. But, I'm about to take them to Mallorca for a week, rain is unlikely and I would prefer not to have them squealing at me all week.

  • Do you even discs? #in4scobl

  • sigh
