Pros generally prefer longer top tubes and reach because they are mostly in the drops with a flat back for most of the race, whereas 'civilian' riders probably tend to sit up for the most part and be on the hoods.
When I were a lad...the adage was small tubes (frame) long parts. In other words keep your frame as small as possible and make up the length with a longer stem, cranks and seatpost.
