Whenever I run a video on my macbook pro the fan starts over running and ticking sounds makes a sound like white noise but mechanical. Is this fixable or will it leave a large apple shaped hole in my wallet?

could be dust? Open it up and take a look

Hinge on the new MBP is gorge

Do you mean the new Macbook?
Whole thing is gorgeous. Worth reading the stuff about the design, it's genuinely impressive:

Looks fantastic, except for the single 'everything port'. Two would be fine, but one is ridiculous.

'Things' is good as well, though it's still pricey when you add in the iOS apps

Bet the new MacBook will double as the iPad Pro whenever it lands

So I'm going to go for the new Macbook
I'm in Hong Kong in May - should I buy it there or get a student to buy it here?
-
• #7390
But it in Hong Kong, it will be cheapest there. That is were I have bought all of my MacBooks. Only difference is that you don't have a £ key, but it still works in the space were it should be

Starts to get a bit pricey if you want to use a peripheral and charge on the new MacBook. http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2015-03/10/apple-macbook-dongle

And it looks shit. Is the battery replaceable with all the extra cycles it'll be getting? Probably cost a mint if it is too.
:(

Highly doubt it, and who actually replaces a battery? Part from some pro users that is...
I really like the idea of no connectors. All data in the cloud, backups via wifi and Time Machine, peripherals over bluetooth, printers over wifi. For a consumer machine I think it makes perfect sense.

Hmm, it's a backwards step in function and design really. Yes, the simplicity of 1 port but they lose the brilliant magsafe - which I'm sure has saved my MBP many spills. Then you need a dongle with extra ports? WTF - this isn't a neat solution. It's like all the old windows based ultrabooks that are sleek and thin but you have to carry a poorly designed 2Kg power transformer with you.
What happens when Bluetooth doesn't work (which is always) or you can't connect to wifi? And you've left the dongle at home? at least 1 USB port wouldn't have hurt.

Any recommendations for Timesheet/Invoicing software?
I've been asked to implement a chargeback system at work and need to log my hours, but also send out Invoices to the Depts. I work with...

That doesn't bother me - like the article says there will be amazon replicas in no time. I've never paid full price for apple specific peripherals because they chop and change so regularly.
I'll only ever need one port for transferring files to a HD or memory stick.
Only annoying thing will be the ability to stream live sports - so I'll invest in the dongle for this.

What about USB/Firewire/Thunderbolt audio interfaces? Does this mean you'd have to choose between having audio in or power? That's mental.

I've replaced the battery on my original Macbook. After a few years it just got rubbish and that was being very careful to minimise charge cycles.
The big bonus over the air is the Retina screen, which I'd like for viewing/editing photos and having to unplug the charger to plug in my camera or phone will be frustrating and probably limit the life of the laptop. I'd want to keep it around 5 years and that just doesn't look viable.

You should get a chromebook ...
Thanks. This made a significant difference.
