Air Canada don't offer as much of a saving and my Canadian friends completely hate them.

Hate them? They seem to be generally well regarded and in my limited experience heading to your part of the world they have always been my preferred option, though sometimes more expensive.
I think the hate is partly down to their dominance and the fact they were nationalized in the 80s.
