True but last year at least, with the new hybrids, was more an indication of poor packaging and poor cooling than anything else imo.

Shorter is not necessarily always better. A longer wheelbase can offer improved high speed stability and aero benefits. Really it's how it integrates with the whole system of car dynamics. Every team will have different design philosophies.
