I was invited along to a friend's band practice today - it was my first foray into portraiture/live music photography, but I am really happy with this after a bit of wild colour grading, as dingy studio strip lighting is pretty uninspiring...

The 55-250 STM had its first proper outing yesterday. Did a few shots for my uni sailing club at a local racing series, got to sit in a launch for it which helped so much to get some decent angles.

Nice! I really like the 3rd one. How you getting on with it?

Thanks man :)
Yeah it appears to be all the lens I need. Much sharper at the long end than my 75-300, the shorter 55mm is actually quite handy, and of course IS helps a bunch. Thanks for the recommendation! -

had a play with an x100t in john lewis, felt like a good size, but the lens felt tiny and compact, think I was expecting something slightly larger, more in line with their removable lenses rangefinder lookalikes, also felt like my left hand was touching too many buttons on the left side of the body, but liked the viewfinder, and the heft of it, am still debating whether to get it, but probably will..

Q:
Are there any well built Digital Compact cameras with a fixed focal length (preferably 40-50mm equiv') ? Or is the Ricoh GRD my only option?

Sony RX1?
-
• #9142
I was hoping for something more compact, akin to how I use my MjuII. It fits in a jersey pocket and I have no issues with using it without a case.
I have a Ricoh GX200 but I like the speed and dropablity™ of cheap point+shoots (like the £50 Nikons or the old MjuII cameras).

GRD's certainly feels fairly tough but 28mm is quite a difference to 40-50.
There's the Coolpix A, basically more or less the same thing.
There's also the sigma DP range - the DP2 is 41mm equivalent - famously not easy to get on with for many people due to the slow focusing largely.
Panasonic GM1/5 + 20mm (40mm equiv) could be an option, doesn't fold away flat but it is very small, lens would be detachable obviously. I wouldnt describe the body as tank-like but nor does it feel like it would fall apart in a week either.

Thank you for your replies BTW.
Coolpix A
This one is new to me. Manual focus ring is a nice touch. Manual focus on the Ricoh is shit (snap focus is cool though).
I did try a Sigma DP a while back (it didn't set my world alight TBH) and it's bigger/more-camera than I want.
I might have a play with some cheap compacts and see which are quickest. Not many use sliding lens covers it seems – a barrier between sweaty cyclists and the lens is a good thing!

If you look among the common compacts with a small fold-away zoom then the Sony RX-100 series would still seem to be the one to beat.
I Imagine you can get the RX-100 I very cheap these days. I've a few friends with one (cyclists and photographers) who like it a lot. It's not quite instant-on like a fixed lens camera but that seems the same no matter what compact you get.

Sony RX-100
I'll look into these, sounds just the ticket.
This camera is for shooting whilst out riding so startup speed is less crucial than quick focusing (or snap focus) and shooting speed.
I may just trade up my GX200 to a GRD and use the crop to 35mm function.
Thanks again.

@tina.kino I'm liking these shuttered window ones you've been doing.
Does anyone want an EF35mm f2? Bought three years ago, has 3rd party lens hood and has mostly lived on my crop camera as a 50mm equiv.
VGC, no scratches or dust etc.
Just bought the new IS version so don't really need it anymore. -

If you're still looking for one, PM me!
Yeah, its on old street so the developers are trying to be down with the kids without realising they've all fucked-off because its too expensive.
They're just trading on its hipster heritage, basically.
