They certainly used to make a break-away road bike. One sold on ebay lately for not too much money.
I'd personally like to keep my options open on such a bike and have the ability to fit big tyres and go off-piste when travelling in exchange for a slight hit on on-road handling.
Can't imagine it'd have any problems. I rode one cross-spec and it felt great. Ritchey do make a steel road frame but I'm not sure there is a Breakaway version of that?
Handling fee is 2.5% I think. Google HM customs.
