• I've got another which watch should I buy question; this is probably going to seem quite extravagant but it's not my money so I'll just say it how it is & hope someone can help (please):

It's my girlfriends 30th Birthday next month & her dad has generously offered to buy her a nice watch (in the "something to keep for the rest of your life & remember you got it for your 30th" kind of thinking). She has asked me which ones I think she should try as she's never really looked into high-ish end watches that much & whilst I could reel of a whole list of watches I would like, the women's watch world seems a bit limited. If I lay out the broad guide-lines could someone point me in the right direction please?

The budget will be between £2-3k; as her dad is buying it, it will need to be new & be purchased from a bricks & mortar shop in London. He's nearly 70 so it will have to be a brand he's heard of - he's quite into luxury products so I imagine he knows most big brands, he just won't know anything really new or super niche.

Style wise she likes kind of classic styling, preferably no (or not too many) jewels on the face & it'll need to be mostly gold or rose-gold (she doesn't wear silver coloured jewelry). Nothing too big or blingy.

I've suggested the Tag Heuer Aquaracer with rose-gold but I'd like to give her some more informed opinions too. Any suggestion would be much appreciated.

  • In my opinion Omega or Rolex (if she's happy with the Rolex connotations). I'd aim for automatic rather than quartz if you are splashing out thousands. Mechanical will last a lifetime, quartz will if spare movements are available in years to come...

I just got my sister an Omega Constellation quartz, in stainless, for £370. I think I'd have pushed for a plain-as-possible Rolex Oyster if funds had permitted.
