  • 12-27 is what I've got kicking around. On old road wheels. I fancy riding these till they die. Or I do.

  • I've seen a couple people with 38 x 12-28, seems like a middle of the park gearing!

  • But..but red anodised bolts are pro?

  • The @Chalfie shaped conundrum we have is that you've not raced cross on gears, so we can't look at any real data to ascertain whether a 38, 40 or 42 is best for you.

But with those ratios I'd go 38, it'll give you a decent lowest gear for uphill training and a good range at the higher end for most cross races, even dry ones.

  • Data!?
    I do things on feel.....

  • (ta)

  • I was running 38 x 12-28 at the end of the season. If you can't turn 38x28 over you'd be better off running anyway. Good for end of season slop but perhaps a bit undergeared for a few races at the beginning of the season if you're a masher.

  • Under geared for you, you animal

  • Pretty sure @J.Dennis lapped me riding 48x15 SS during one of those sloppy races.

  • Enough! Enough!

I'll be getting myself a 40t if I wear out the 38t over summer. Some have been complaining about dropping chains with a 38t but not a 42t. It makes sense that a bigger chainring should have more chain wrap and therefore better chain-holding capabilities but I can't see it making much difference when 29ers are running as low as 30t chainrings.

  • Dropped my chain a couple of times this year, always when hitting the smaller sprockets, and mostly on training rides.

Due to my chainring being utterly shagged, I think.

  • Hi, I'm back, what's the next race?

  • @Chalfie needs a CX (life) coach

  • @Zed You have a coach? For all your bikes? That you ride loads?

  • September?

  • :(

  • Possible spam: I'm selling a full carbon cross fork (canti) from off of my fetching baby blue pompino (size medium).
I've not got the steerer tube length to hand, but i'm after the princely sum of 50 quid.

    anyone?

  • It's a Ritchey WCS fork, RRPs at around £300.

  • I'm not selling that one!!!

  • I've been rolling about on a 39T with a 12-28, feels pretty decent for hacking about in the woods, will probably get a wide narrow at some point. Had a bit of a moment last night when the chain came off whilst smashing the 39-12.... slightly scary!

  • Remember drooling over this at Milton Keynes.

For £2,000 you get: carbon frame, CX1 w/ hydro discs, ksyrium pro wheelset.

Current estimate is mid-April, according to Steve from Radial.

  • Also, would match my kit...
