Thanks. Is the M530 worth the additional price? I thought maybe the bigger platform on that one would allow me to use it with normal shoes?

The cage on the M530 and other "trail SPD" models protects the pedal and supports the sole when used with recessed cleats but they don't add much support for flat-soled shoes.

The 'Trail' style pedals aren't really intended for use with normal shoes, the clicky bits stick up above the platform so you end up standing on that rather than a pseudo-flat pedal. If you really want to ride a lot in flat shoes, you want something like the PD-M324 or one of the other single sided road/touring SPD pedals like PD-A530.
