• Why the Stages hatez - one sided and interwebz reliability reputation?

    Not much serious competition for MTB except Quark if you want to run XX1. P2m is pretty weighty as well as 2x cost and Powertap weighty and new versions not so well thought of?

    DA 9000 rear vs. Powertap G3 = 248g vs. 330g.
    82g difference is less than the added weight of a P2M Type S which I think was ~120g

    If you think 82g or 120g is weighty then you're Marco Pantani AICMFP

    Weight difference is smaller than I realised but I need to swap between wheel sizes and axle standards plus want to be able to run XX1 and QR in the future.

    The Good - P2Max is a doddle to install and set up. Even someone as inept as I with a spanner can do it (thanks amey for the loan of the tool)

    The Not So Good - A short test spin, with Trainerroad's virtual power to compare numbers with, suggests FTP is probably nearer 315/4.5 than 330/4.7 (TR's virtual power was within 15 watts along the whole curve, which I thought was impressive)

    The Bad - There isn't one. Hurrah

  • Apologies. It wasn't an attempt at dick swinging, just initial thoughts having got it working.

    Now, is it just me or is Golden Cheetah somewhat complicated? Is there something mac friendly that bridges the gap between Garmin Connect/Strava simplicity and GC? Or does anyone know of a good online resource to read about and learn the functionality of GC?

    I'm reading the Coggan and Alan book, but it relates more to WKO. Am I better off paying for online training peaks?

    Lots of questions I know.

  • Online Training Peaks is great but doesn't, as far as I can see, allow you to do the sort of analysis they do. That's academic for me 'cos I couldn't do such complicated sessions anyhow without brain explosion. Base miles to power plus simple intervals with occasional race data for me.

    Training peaks best features are the power category chart - wish they would equate to MTB XC too - and the fitness chart as well as a good diary function that sums TSS and IF etc.

  • The sort of stuff I want to do is to build up a picture of my strengths and weaknesses over the next month or so as I accumulate data. After that I'll decide on some targets, but for now I'd like an easy to understand tool that clearly shows my x minute power isn't bad, but my y needs work.

    It might be that Strava premium is enough for now and I should wait to move to something more complicated once I start to get a handle on my numbers.

  • Yeah - I like the Training Peaks pro (with BC discount it comes out pretty reasonable) - it does most of the stuff mentioned in the book (the only thing I have yet to find is quadrant analysis) and I like being able to view/upload from multiple devices etc and review data on my tablet/phone.

    The power profile is probably what you are after (along with the peak power curve)

    I'm using Golden Cheetah but it is quite a mindfuck and unwieldy.

    @TTM, you willy waving bellend, Golden Cheetah is pretty brutal to get your head around. You may as well start with that and see how you get on. I've found a few useful pages that i look at after a ride and am slowly trying to understand the rest. The Strava Premium stuff is a good basic overview too.

    I have a BB30 frame with one of those Praxxis sleeves and an Ultegra crankset. Which P2M should I continue to look at casually?
