Yes, it's the West End if you're going to buy something at retail, but it's traditionally the City if you're going to work. Of course, now that the hedgies and private equity managers have taken over Mayfair & St. James', the meaning of 'town' has drifted too. If you're going out in the evening, you don't go to town, you go 'up West', even if you have to travel east to get there.

Basically my girl friend and I have a sort of ongoing argument / discussion on this.
She doesn't believe it's a used term for the West End/Central London. I think it is relative to the context, but usually means the West End. Ie "i need to go to town to buy x".
Basically I wanted to check if it was recognise by anyone else.
