  • I'm thinking of getting a Fuji X100s, it was praised highly by a cameraman friend of mine because of its ability to mimic old fuji slide film, as I'm shooting 35mm E6 on an old rangefinder, and I think I'd like to get it to replace my Ricoh GR.
Anyone got one and like/love it? Anyone got one to sell for small beer? (cheeky I know) Anyone have any shots they've taken with it, which show how good/bad it is?

    Let me know.

Should just say all the reviews I've seen online are of the "I love this camera so much, its a step forward from the X100, which was also a great but quirky camera" variety, so I'm probably looking for a bit more affirmation, before I stump up the cash...

  • Prepare yourself. Bias is coming...
The X100/s/t is great - takes a bit of getting used to but the image quality is v.nice. Mainly though, its unobtrusive and basically silent which will probably change the way you take pictures.
As for the slide film emulation, yeah, it has a bunch of presets but they dont really reflect the films they're named after. Still very nice though. I usually shoot raw+jpeg and will often be happy with just the jpeg.

    • on X100/s/t best camera I've ever used.
  • Big size up from GR... not as much an EDCC.

  • Had a play with a X100S the other day.
I'm not in the market for a camera like this, but was very curious still, seing how Fuji managed to get such a overwhelming response to their recent cameras - and of course seing images from the X100 series cameras and really loving the colours / being quite impressed with image quality in general.

I read about how beautifully made it is, but really my first impression was that it does feel somewhat dinky. Didn't like holding it in my hands, basically, I don't know - the way it feels / the size and feel of the dials and buttons.. just didn't like this at all.

I guess my point being: image quality is great, but if you come from a "true" 35mm film rangefinder then better go hold it in your hands and see if you like it.

  • 28mm vs (native) 35mm is the only reason I'd change ship. I do consider Ricoh GR to be an almost perfect camera.

  • @well_is_it, @edscoble, @tina.kino, @withered_preacher, thanks for all your thoughts.

I do love my Ricoh GR, had one for the last 7 odd years, and like it because I can put it in my pocket and take shots whenever I need to, and don't have to faff about with carrying a large SLR or different lenses, once you get your head round the fixed lens thing it's a beautiful little camera. But I feel like I've stood still photographic wise and using my 35mm rangefinder I'm prepared to go a bit bigger with the camera.
Also I like the looks of the thing, reminds me of the camera I'm currently using, but smaller and more modern, but also allows me to tweak things manually, rather than relying on the electronics to do everything, which I like, since that's what I've grown up doing..

Will have a handle of one in the next couple of weeks to see how it feels

  • @cornelius_blackfoot

Do have a play with one in a shop. Personally I think they're great. I also have a Ricoh GR which I use for cycling and general put-in-pocket-just-in-case stuff, and the x100t I take out when I have something more specific in mind. It works quite well for that. I'm liking limiting myself to fixed lenses, also. Makes me spend more time trying to take photos and less wondering which lens I should be using.

  • I'm guessing you've considered a Leica digital body as you already have the lens. Second hand M8's are less than £1000. M9's around £2k. Both have their weak points but the IQ/haptics are excellent.

  • You're speaking of the GR series, yes?
The GR Digital, which only came out a little less than 2 years ago, seems to be ahead of previous iterations in a variety of ways.

  • @h2o definitely want to have a play with one, kind of want one camera to rule them all, so I'd probably ship the GR on to a good home.

@withered_preacher Yep GR digital series, think mine was the 2 or 3 which I got after fucking the lens on my previous one. I know they've come out with newer versions, but they look identical so it somehow doesn't feel like a new camera.

  • I think the lack of change in ergonomics and looks points to the robustness of the design - If only Ricoh could make it perform a little better in low light/action situations.
I love mine, even the 28mm which almost made me not buy it.
I find cropping still leaves enough info to make pics that please me.

  • I bought an x100s this week. Haven't used it properly yet, but the build quality and overall "feel" is mighty impressive, even if I do already have a control-related gripe, which is the need to move a hand to change metering mode. Kinda feel like it should really, really be available on the Function button as opposed to some of the useless (for me) stuff that is on that little menu... Unless I've missed something?

I am obviously in the midst of that new camera (or new anything) clumsiness though!

Should be using it quite a over the weekend, so will report back with some shots soon :)

  • Why don't they make blocks of flats look like giant robot bugs anymore?

  • you could fit 3 x £300k flats in that gap
    near mile end right ?

  • Looks like Broadway Market to me, or just north of Hackney rd?

But yeah, that 1M worth of empty space right there

  • Hackney Road it is.

  • Very nice!

  • ..cheers!

    Also here's (sort-of) a fence for you.
As seen in the analogue thread weeks ago - I passed this house entrance again today, and it looked exactly the same as the end of last year..

  • Lovely light. Great seagull placement.
