  • I didn't say that. What I said was I'd read a number of posts about tektros rusting and said that I'd seen this happen personally with cheaper alhongas.

The Shimano got better reviews both in terms of not rusting and also braking performance. Price wise there was about a tenner difference in it, so I chose shimano instead.

  • One of the upsides of getting your bike stolen, getting to build another one. Same concept but less fancy this time around (no derailleurs to start with). So, CX frame fitted with the biggest tires it can take, 50mm Big Apples for this one.

  • I've no bother with Tektro rusting on one of my bikes. Bear in mind it gets kept indoors, perhaps if you treat a bike very harsh they may rust a bit.

Also: Vaseline For The Win to protect any steel in the salty damp Belfast air.

  • It's rust, doesn't mean it'll stop working.

  • GT85 people. Gives you gleaming bike bits (and cancerous man-bits).

  • Well for the sake of a tenner, I'd rather go for the better performing, hopefuly less rust prone option. Not like we are talking fortunes in it here.

  • same frames,this from porn

    mine

got some concors in stock , so may just use that as liking the look of with this frameset, ano on ds crank arm has shoe/pedal rub, so may also de ano and not polish too highly for cleaner excution

the alan with the stay cap issuse came with a campag sr "super record" (the recent frame is a super record),seatpost, has a curious "C" panto on, so maybe chesini, was not aware that chesini seat posts were same diameter as alan, the victory gruppo has and aero post , also alan size, so will probs just go aero

  • Pretty excited to be picking up one of these to act as a child carrier/day tripper tomorrow. 80s 650b, yo!

  • err 650c ..

  • chesini?

  • Sounds good; where did you find it? any actual pics?

  • It was on eBay, collection only - buyer flaked out on the deal. I messaged seller and am going down the road to get it tomorrow. Missing the original racks unfortunately, but the rest of the group is there and it seems in good nick - no idea what's happening with the shifters, the seller says it's all original (1989).

These are rare as owt apparently, so happy with what I'm paying (£150)

Does say 650c in the spec on eBay, but I'm going with the rest of the web on this. I hadn't even thought to check until you mentioned it! Mild panic...

Not entirely sure what to do with it. I'm going to assess how much is original and if there's enough then I'll restore, if not it'll go to 1x8 as I live in the flattest city on earth (York) and would rather keep it simple.

I'd never heard of them but they have a solid cult following and reach stupid money on eBay USA apparently. Restore very well - I love those old Raleigh colourways. http://www.gumwalls.com/stateside-650b-1985-raleigh-portage/

Suicide levers will be first to go, obviously.

Very likely to be 650b rather than 650c.

  • Indeed that's Chesini's "C".
Probably Alan did some frames for them (as they did for many other brands)

  • ok,thanks,will sell then
    n.b.
me , @erikfox and @peter_v were on a retro ride and there fella there who had 75 chesini, a real gent, I was at his house before when he only had 50, chromovelato, full panto'd gruppi,
    some pension scheme

  • Yeah, the only mention of 'portage' and '650c' is on Sheldon, highlighting the mistake in the spec sheet.

Will see what condition it's in tomorrow anyway.

  • From finding her in the canal:

To stripping her down and removing extra braze ons and bits:

Then filling in holes and applying primer:

To the first coat (colour my friend wanted, i'm building it for her):

Question, shall I paint the lugs burgundy? or any other colour? Pink?

  • don't paint the lugs! you can line them, but don't paint them.

  • paint the lugs..... Pink?

@tallsam - yep its some old brake housing sliding on old barrel brake cable poked betwixt binder and seatpost; makes it comfy and stops scratches.

Done a few bits - so now featuring new 9spd chain, bartape and front tyre.. I was considering tubeless, but seating the front tyre on the UST rim took longer than the other 2 jobs, so don't fancy added slime and faffing around. Album ..weighing in at 13.6kg

    No.

Also unless lugs are relatively fancy (which they don't look) I wouldn't line them.

  • ^ Yep, don't embarrass that frame.
    It'd be like putting ___ on a ___ .
    Just not right.

  • Nice headtube badge.

  • Coolio. Cheers guys, as I expected, lugs painted will look shit. Will clear coat it soon and build it up :)
