Has it not crossed your mind that they've put that to a) make her appeal normal, b) try and appeal to a broader audience and c) to get a reaction thus getting outraged people like you to share it?

She's an astrophysics PHD student who has proved herself so far by getting to this stage of the competition. If you want to reduce her to a single quote go ahead, but if you think that liking make-up has a positive or negative effect on how someone can do their job then you are the vacuous (and judgemental) one.
