If you've ever bought anything from Amazon and opted for next day delivery (or words to that effect), you've signed yourself up to a free trial of Amazon Prime.
This reverts to full membership after 99 days, and you get charged £79 a year, which is taken straight off whatever credit card is in their records. You don't get a confirmation email telling you you're a member of anything, and you don't get a reminder email telling you they are about to charge you.
Apparently I've been a member of amazon prime since september 2012, although I have no recollection of ever even signing up for the trial. It's only because twitter has gone bonkers over it this evening that I bothered to log in to amazon and check my account settings.
To be fair, they were pretty helpful on the phone. There is a bit in the "contact us" section on the website where you can put your telephone number in and they ring you straight away. They have promised to refund me £79, but that only covers one year. I may have to push them a bit harder.
God knows how many people have been blindly paying for this stuff. Check your account settings!
