I would definitely try to use a geared hub. These things are so heavy, especially if you use wood to build the box. No shame in wanting to be able to get up a 2% incline without the risk of coming to a halt, losing control of the weird box-steering mechanism and crashing back down.
That said, if you use lightweight materials for the box (crabon!) you could finally own a trifixie.
i am going to build her up as she is first....... but i am looking into geared hub/drum wheelsets, if i can find something that looks in keeping or of the right age i will put it on.
