  • yeah, the site does say up to 35 but i wasn't too sure whether they were saying you could fit 35 or whether you should. i may risk is as they look good on yours!

re the rim width, isn't that for internal width? which would make the al30s 13.5?

  • I've had 2" on 13.8mm internal for ages. It is fine if you dont intend to use it on low pressures. It will feel akward when cornering with low psi.

  • Seems fine! There were a few tiny spots of rust underneath it, but nothing's gotten worse in the last 5 months.

  • The Kojaks are 35mm wide in their 28" size but 50mm in 26" i.e. these are real "balloon tyres" in this latter size only?

The 26" come in 1.35" (35mm) and 2.0". The 1.35" is essentially the same as the Durano 26x1.35" but with grippier rubber compounds.

If you want a baloon tyre, look at the Big Apple or Super Moto.

  • You won't be able to fit a 50 mm tyre or anything above 35mm on those wheels because the internal rim width is only 13.6 mm.

I run 32C Challenge Grifo's on 15 mm internal rims and I gotta say cornering sucks.

  • I'm running the 26x1.35 folding kojaks on my polo bike. They're really grippy and roll really fast when you take them up to max psi. I'll be replacing them with the same when they've worn out.

  • Very nice build! Love the blue and red.

Also very jealous of where you're riding it, rainy Birmingham has nothing on Paris!

  • @Heldring : Indeed, Sheldon's chart is much more conservative than the one I have inserted above, as a general rule, he mentioned that "A general guideline is that the tire width should be between 1.45/2.0 x the inner rim width": http://sheldonbrown.com/tire-sizing.html (see "Width considerations" near the end of the page)

@Dtroll : Kojaks are great, I used them in slippy situations this weekend and they were quite grippy (but terrible in the mud no surprise)

@nott_mike : Blue Pomps rule! Hmmm, I dream to travel by bike to the north of the UK, variety is the key?! Even wet, I absolutely loved Belgian Flanders this weekend =)

  • Great pics, looks like some good riding. Variety is definitely key! Looking forward to ditching the commute in favour of some touring this summer!

  • Also, had the day off today as its half term and I definitely don't have important assignments or job applications to do... So went a bit mad with some cheap eBay vinyl.

  • I guess that works. 35mm kojaks in a xc717 rim is just over the sheldon brown x2 limit. Pumped t up to max though!

  • On slicks you can go x3

  • Drop to 80, they'll be grippier.

  • 35mm Kojaks slicks and 13.6mm AL30 rims look fine for now -> if something goes wrong and I survive, I will let you know!

@nott_mike : impressed by your vinyl works, this looks promising for Candy Crush (the little name of my red&blue Pomp...)!

BTW, is the chainline on the 120mm Pompino V4 fine with your external bearing Alfine crankset?

  • The chainline is almost spot on, not sure of the exact numbers but it's within 1 or 2 millimetre so not noticable when riding normally. Worth it for the simplicity of an external bottom bracket.

  • I'm toying with the idea of getting a cardon fork to put in the front of my Pompino (New, non wish bone seat stays) does anybody have any suggtion for a fork for canti brakes which will closely mirror the fork it comes with. I really love the way it handles but would like to make it a bit lighter. Cheers

  • Interesting, and still possible to correct with chainring spacers then?

  • I suppose it could be corrected to be perfect but the alfine gives a 42.7mm chainline when the chainring is on the inner of the tabs. My hub gives 42.

I run a 1/8th chain with 3/32 chainring and sprocket so It's not at all noticeable, definitely a set up I'd recommend!

  • Ridiculous PX and One-One steel bundle deals at the moment.

You get half a pomp (no wheels and drivetrain) for £200.

  • Link?

  • cheers

  • I know! I nearly bought a mountain bike I don't need, have no space for and which - in my fiancée's words - "would make [her] quite cross".

  • I almost bought one too but saved myself while I was putting the credit card details in. I want a pomp, but I have 99% of the parts I need and the others I don't want to chose from Planet-X's parts bin. I'll wait till the frames get discounted again.

    pretty good deal though.
