  • That is ambitious cargo bike riding right there. Would like to have seen the landing and inevitable bounce. Chassis flex time!

  • I can already hear the ambulance

  • You could go for a more heavy-duty version of this:

  • Is that like a tiny petrol motor?

  • there's someone over here who put an engine from one of these on the rear wheel of one of these.
I'll snap a pic next time I see it. it's pretty ratty cool.

  • Yep, called a Cyclemaster - there's a couple of different sizes, the more recent one (1956?) is a 32cc two stroke.

  • There's a complete bike on eBay right now: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Cyclemaster-Bicycle-/301522879733?pt=UK_Motorcycles&hash=item46342a04f5

In need of rather extensive renovation, which I'd love to get involved with if I could only discover another two days in the week.

  • Found the whole of the 1939 catalog. Seems they made a model with a motor..... Tho the power assistance is appealing, for this build i will be sticking with human power (more bikes, less cars). I would also like to try and keep true to the original bike as close as i can.

  • I would definitely try to use a geared hub. These things are so heavy, especially if you use wood to build the box. No shame in wanting to be able to get up a 2% incline without the risk of coming to a halt, losing control of the weird box-steering mechanism and crashing back down.

That said, if you use lightweight materials for the box (crabon!) you could finally own a trifixie.

  • How much (approx) would a wooden-box version weigh?

  • This is just a wonderful thing. I wish you every success in restoring and finding things to replace on it. I literally can't wait for it to develop! The second milk wagon in the catalogue is just brilliant. I assume you'll go for a shallower simpler box like the last one in the cat'?

Would be great if you carry a coffin so you could lend it for funerals. It would be perfect, so elegant.

Was it being kept at Charwell boathouse before you acquired it? Lovely Oxfordish thing to get hold of!

  • Those with the engine's are called 'Bakbrommers', so Brommer (moped) instead of fiets (bicycle). In Groningen, where I live, a lot of them are still used by people who work on the weekly markets.

  • i am going to build her up as she is first....... but i am looking into geared hub/drum wheelsets, if i can find something that looks in keeping or of the right age i will put it on.

  • i have no idea, could weigh more if i build a steel structure to hold the wood. would love to see some plans of a design.

  • Thanks skully. The bike is indeed in Oxford, will be in london end of next week.

A bike funeral is surly the only fitting send-off for vast majority of us.

  • yup, not ready to get into the moped territory...... though very beautiful to look at.

  • How much do they normally sell for, in good condition?

  • Yes, yes and yes again!

  • Wow, need to rewrite my will.
My last ride will definitely have to be in one of these!
Awesome project and looking forward to seeing what you do with your new house.
Needs small 2 stroke like the one Dammit put above.

  • Around €800-1000,-

    Here's a specialist website; http://www.nostalgie-oirschot.nl/index.php?pagina=home

  • Thanks!

You can use up to a 300 watt electric motor in the UK - after that you qualify as a motorised vehicle (motorised tricycle in this case).

I wonder if 300 watts+ whatever you bring to the party would be enough to move one of these up a decent hill?

  • Awesome, love how versatile this can be, looks like it'll be a fun project.

  • White coffin though...

    :P
