  • I just use the highway code to work out who has priority.

  • ^ ayup. and you can safely ignore anyone that uses the phrase 'right of way'.

  • i suspect you'd be hard pressed to find anyone on here who hasn't had a bus driver pull over seconds after being overtaken. kennington road / brixton road is rife with this sort of cuntery.>

    Yep, has definitely happened to me. I once was so angry at being pushed off the road I tried to smash a bus window with my bike. Happily in my experience such terrible driving of buses is rare. I think a change in my own behaviour, as I've described, has also led to fewer similar incidents. If there's a bus behind me, I take primary, so they can't get past. If there's one in front, I hang back or overtake on the right. ed's point is that cyclists are encouraged to hug the gutter by cycle lanes. Problem is, the safest reactions to situations are as varied as the roads, and inexperienced cyclists are bound to get it wrong, often.

  • Good point. We all have a right to undertake buses as much as we want without anyone pointing out it is stupid.

    No, we're way past that, we've already been conditioned to ride on the very edge of the kerbs for the last 20 years, and suddenly we're at fault.

    People don't undertake out of malice, and drivers should have been well trained to avoid collision, the Highway Code have address this already.

  • You have made me realise that I see cyclists as stupid for being simply ignorant, they need to be shown a more safe way to ride. I should not be angry at all cyclists who undertake, after all it took me a while to realise it was wrong.

  • You have made me realise that I see cyclists as stupid for being simply ignorant.

    For what it's worth, it took me a long time to realised this as well.

  • This is a massive issue. The fact that most cyclists are still conditioned to have a keep left, pass left mentality (Which is a major shift in mentality that happens after cycle training)

    Even when the right side has no oncoming vehicles and there is a little gap to the left of the vehicle in front many still choose the small gap.

    (Yesterday I was behind a guy on a black fixed (Surly?) proper on-here type, who repeated squeezed in gaps to the left over tower bridge, while I was passing right making eye contact with the drivers right side mirror so they moved left to give me even more space. Eventually he got stuck when a bus moved right next to the kerb to let me overtake)

    This is so ingrained and would take a concerted campaign (like with seatbelts) to affect change. Which won;t happen at least with this government who refuse to fund any public information/behaviour change campaigns

  • don't add to the list of dickheads and stay out of their way then. pretty easy

    This is about the time that I wheel out this particular cut and paste job.

    The lorry driver who killed cyclist Catriona Patel was drunk and chatting on a mobile.

    The lorry driver who killed Eilidh Cairns had faulty eyesight (the police didn't even bother to discover this until the same driver killed another woman.)

    The lorry driver who killed cyclist Brian Dorling turned across his path.

    The lorry driver who killed cyclist Svetlana Tereschenko was in an unsafe lorry, failing to indicate and chatting on a mobile. The police decided to charge him with..nothing.

    The lorry driver who killed cyclist Deep Lee failed to notice her and smashed into her from behind.

    The lorry driver that killed cyclist Andrew McNicoll failed to notice him and side swiped him.

    The lorry driver that killed cyclist Daniel Cox was in a truck which did not have the correct mirrors and whose driver had pulled into the ASL on a red light and was indicating in the opposite direction to which he turned.

    Perhaps I should update this for the cyclists that have been killed in the past few months by inattentive or otherwise negligent drivers.

    Calling them dickheads? Because they were in the way? Get fucked with your victim blaming.

  • Find that list of the causes of death of the London cyclists' that details in quite a lot of cases it was the driver's fault. What are you to do if the skip lorry overtakes you and immediately turns left?

    EDIT: I see TW has done it work for you.

  • I just heard today some information on what appears to be another instance of serious driver error (not involving a lorry). I'm not going to say what it was for various reasons until it's confirmed.

  • refuse to fund any public information/behaviour change campaigns

    Apart from the stickers on the backs of vehicles, or are they not government funded?

  • He's talking about a proper campaigns, like they have in Spain where they show an advert of how to overtake cyclists, lots of proper roadsign incidating this etc.

    What did the British do? put a small sticker on the back of professional vehicles.

  • THINK! have lots of TV adverts toward drunk driving;

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CERT0xNFGo4

    We have barely anything, apart from the Scottish one.

  • Careful, don't compare undertaking to drink driving, you'll be accused of victim blaming... :)

    We have barely anything, apart from the Scottish one.

    Macbeth?

  • Drink driving and left hook both can cause fatalities, the latter is merely acceptable in society.

    video;

  • That video of the lorry incident on the previous page just makes me seethe.

    I have no idea what happened after, but I can see:
    Shocked looking rider with fucked bike;
    Ineffectual copper looking apathetic;
    Passive-aggressive lorry driver immediately blaming victim, as he has a sign.

  • cyclists stay back stickers bug me !

  • Maybe we should have stickers that say 'Warning! Do not Squash'.

  • "Warning! May suddenly appear when you're not paying attention!"

    I've started angling one of my Chinese Cree retina burners slightly higher so as to catch mirrors with the edge of the beam.

  • a bus driver's likely behaviour when they choose to pull-over fast?

    http://clancybrothersandtommymakem.com/images/p25a_cb.jpg

  • those all happened because they knowingly undertook? is that what you're pointing out? i don't see any of that on the list.

  • Sticker on the back, sticker on the side...

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bXu0PyCp4Lo

  • £60 + 3 points on your license for over taking around a traffic island like matey did there. would have to be an idiot to go and do that.

  • I hope he stays back next time. Really stupid riding.

  • just what i was thinking. ironic too that he throws his hand in the air as the guy in front pulled out on him - i guess without looking, which is exactly what the bloke on the bike did, pulled out without looking behind him. theres probably another bloke behind him with a gopro on his head complaining about the twat in front and sticking it on youtube.
