RS31 is 30mm deep with 16-spoke front, R501-30 is 30mm deep with 20-spoke front. Even I'm fine on the 16-spoke ones, so a lightweight like Ed doesn't need the 20-spoke wheels. The minor advantage of the cheaper wheels (besides being cheap) is the conventional spokes, but as I've never broken a spoke on Shimano factory wheels, that's moot.

A nice bed and breakfast in Eastbourne
Stay at my pals Jenny and Justin's in Bexhill and have a pleasant 10 mile seaside ride through Pevensey Bay to Eastbourne.

When swapping a 10spd cassette from an Ultegra 6800 wheel to an R501, why is the original locking not long enough? I read 10spd cassette must have a spacer, so I found a narrow one and that worked, although indexing needs correction.

6800 is 11 speed ain't it? So you need the spacer for those wheels but not the R501s.
-

You need a 1mm spacer to use most Shimano 10-speed cassettes on Shimano 8/9/10-speed hubs. You need an additional 1.85mm spacer to use Shimano 10-speed cassettes on Shimano 11-speed hubs.

Thank you. That looks nice. Booked out obviously. We were lucky and found something near to the fossils.

I did read that, but the cassette only had what I think was the 1.85mm spacer when on the 6800 wheel and that worked fine. Is that what you mean, or that normally 11spd should have total 2.85mm of spacers? Also, I thought R501 wheel was also 11spd hence I'm confused that same setup does not work.

R501 is 8/9/10-speed. Which 10-speed cassette are you using?
-
• #66311
5600..

Put a small spacer and you'll be fine, it's those 1mm one that tester said.

Ok. Think my main mistake was thinking R501 was 11spd compat. Thanks all!

I'm thinking about getting mudguard and rack eyelets brazed onto my Gazelle. Where does the forum recommend? And what sort of price would I be looking at?
Also I don't want to get a full repaint. Nor do I want ultra rat. I haven't worked out what that means yet...

Probably around £60, plenty of local frame builder, I think your nearest one is Talbot Framework.
Do you have plenty of clearance between the tyres and frame?
-
• #66316
there's enough - I always have mudguards on, just fancied doing away with P-clips and stuff.
wasn't sure if somewhere like Talbot would bother with small stuff but I guess I'll call them. -

Does anyone have any examples of a late 80's / early 90's steel bike using modern components?
I've got a nice old SLX frame that I'm thinking of modernising, and wanted to see some examples of it done tastefully.
Ta!

• #66321
Do it, old frame with modern kit is a winner.

Not steel, but my early 90s 'Dale 2.8 is kitted out with Sram and compact drops.
And a bamboo pole on this pic...

Or were you referring to the plastic monstrosity in @umop3pisdn's post?

Old pic, that bike really is rather lovely in the flesh.
Dunno what the model number is but get the 16 spoke front one.
