  • Cheers dears

  • New frame

  • How is it? Looking to get one of the cheap Vitus/Diamondback/Marin 29ers to keep over in Ireland.

  • They are fine

I had one of those years ago

  • what 29" rims are there about that you can still use rim brakes on?

  • off the top of my herad,
some of the cheap mavic ones.
    wtb dual duty, I think.

  • DT Swiss TK 540
    Velocity dyad
Sun do one too I think

  • Kris Holm freeride.

    super wide too.

  • Super heavy

  • so are our all cities.

  • Is the general consesus that at 47mm the KH Freeride would be wide enough for the likes of a knard or dirt wizard?

  • I'm running a Knard on a 35mm rim, works fine. 47 is plenty wide enough

  • Interesting, is your rim a Blunt or Dually or something? What other wide (ish) 29er rims are there out there?

  • Yeah it's a Blunt/P35, running a 2.4 ardent on it at the moment and that has a nice profile, going to get a matching one for the rear further down the line.

Syntace do a 35mm 29er wheel, unsure if they do rim-only. The new Genesis Longitude comes with 35mm rims too IIRC, unsure of the brand.

There seem to be a few people making crabon 35mm rims - light bicycle and derby rims or something along those lines, I think @gabes has some experience with one of the vendors although maybe not that model...

  • It's for my Fireye, I'm going full retard on it and making it a 69er.

Theres cheap 29er wheels with tyres, tube etc on ebay from some bankrupt bike shop or something so going to pick on of them up just now and run it with a Krampus fork and get a fatter rim and tyre down the line.

  • Syntace do whole wheels only.

I have wide (30mm) Light Bicycle chinese carbon rims, about $160 each, light, super stiff, and mine have done 2500 miles, and never gone out of true, and handled some heavy abuse in wales, riding a fully loaded bike on rough rocky trail centre stuff and loads of natural stuff too.

  • My set up for some off road and canal side (no fucking path involved!) riding... Got my evening attire in the drybag, and other things in the barley on the front... Works really well.

    Edit...the photo is there now!

  • Was there meant to be a photo here ^ :-)

  • Anyone using Kenda Nevegal tyres or WTB Laserdisc Trail rims?

Having real trouble getting that combo to seat properly.

Wheel was bought as a package off ebay, supplied rim tape was utter shit and was all twisted and folded etc so I took it out but nothing I have seems to fit well.

Rim has these bumps at the outsides of the central channel which I think the bead is getting hooked up on.

Rim tapes I've been trying have (it think) been sinking into the channel and sticking up too much making the problem worse.

Supplied tape was 20mm wide, I've tried a 23mm Enve tape, a 15mm Schwalbe tape and a couple layers of 18mm insulating tape. I've now trimmed down a tape so tha its sitting just in the bottom of the central channel, doesn't come up the sides at all, but the tyre still won't seat at 40psi. It's better than with the stock tape or any of the others but not 100% there.

I've been playing with it pretty late at night so don't wanna go made with the track pump incase it annoys the neighbours, just been using a wee hand pump. I'm pretty sure if I take it out to the garage and blast it up to 60psi or so it'll pop in and then I can drop it down but not ideal for trailside repairs.

    Any ideas?

  • Hmmm, strangely googling with a Z in Lazer rather than an S throws up more results even though a lot of them have it spelled the anglicised way.

Looks like I'm just going to have to use the track pump to seat it and its a good excuse to buy a Kris Holm and a Knard a little sooner than I was intending to!
