Don't mind Ed, and welcome to LFGSS

Thanks Olly39, and edscoble, the geared bike is very boring and it's too easy to drop down to a low gear or coast - not to mention less maintenance!

42/16 is fine, I'd just get any decent fixed wheel bicycle OTP for now and commute on it, something like the Charge Plug, Genesis Flyer, or even the On One Pompino (wait till they're like less than £400) is plentiful.
edit - Charge Plug 2 is a decent value in Wiggle at the moment, only thing worth changing is probably the handlebar for something sensible.

^ not in his size, but good value and in the right gearing. Shame

Start on 42-16 and vary after a month or so of riding to either higher speed/less spinning or easier starting/getting up to speed quicker.
You'll need clipless or strapped pedals when fixed.
Newish to London (moved to Woolwich in July). Been commuting to Victoira on a Trek 1000 road bike for a few months and fancy a FG to make it better exercise, a bit more exciting and stop me cleaning my derailleur every weekend!
Any recommendation on gearing, I know 16-42 is pretty commonplace?
Also, on arriving on LFGSS I've seen bike polo is a thing, mad keen to try that somewhere near work or home?!
Any info would be cracking.
P.S Anyone interested in a 51cm geared road bike let me know!
