  • Nice. Am looking fwd to getting home now. I toyed with the idea of them but figured the 2020is would do for my needs. They're pretty cheap right now as well. Think I just paid £130 from Richer Sounds.

I've got a few bits I need shot of. Nothing audiophile but someone might find a use for it: Got some old early 80s Wharfedale Laser 80s (the 2-way ones) in good working order and an ailing but very funky looking Akai receiver in need of a bit of love. Have some little Diamond 9s I might get shot of as well... although they're so small I'm almost tempted to keep them and knock up a little system for the kitchen or something.

Will post pics if anyone's interested. The Lasers and Akai belonged to my grandfather so I'd like someone to get some use out of them.

  • vouching in recommended Yamaha AS500 informant of money spent well- ah!*

*If Mark E Smith wrote for What Hi-Fi

  • ^^ Misinformation there. They were £160 from Richer (in walnut, gotta match the mid-century sideboard yo) and on the evidence of the last 20 minutes since I got home worth every penny and then the same again. They're fucking immense. Super happy.

  • I've seen some Tannoy 609s for £100, is that a good price? Or Someone has some mint 609 MK2s for £140?

    HALP PLS

  • tbh I can't really afford £140 so that's moot, I just want to know if £100 is a good price for the 609s.

  • R.I.P Joseph Grado.

  • Nurse I've never heard 609s but they are reckoned to be good. If the drivers all work and the foam surrounds etc are good, and they come with stands, sounds like a fair price.

  • @BRM played me some 605s when I picked up his amp and CD player, so if they're similar, but better, then I'm in.

Everything looks to be in tip-top condition according to the advert, and they do have stands, so I guess I'll go have a look.

  • I used to have some Tannoy dual-concentrics. Check the tweeter response is even across them. Listen for any rub between the woofer and tweeter by playing something with some bottom end, and bring the level up loud for a small time and listen for crackling, etc.

  • What lovely threads the Emperor is wearing ...

  • For that price you could buy around 400 metres of 11,000 volt, 300mm sq, single core copper cable that's about the diameter of a coke can and used to connect electrical substations and run trains.

  • Very hard to get it into your speaker terminals though.

  • copper is malleable and ductile*

    *O level metalwork

  • Hehehe.

Got a thread in misc. classifieds now including some old wharfedale Laser 80s if anyone's after some cheap and cheerful 3-way boxes (or an old receiver in need of some tlc).

  • Picked up the 609s last night. Do I need to use banana plugs? #noob

  • no, bare wire is fine.

  • Unscrew the terminals and feed the bare wire ends in the holes then screw down.

  • OK good. He chucked in some bi-wire, and a "fancy" cable to connect amp to cd player, soz @BRM the freebie you gave me caused some alarm on his face! However, he could only find 7 banana plugs so last night I wired them up with the normal cable I had already bought, and 4 of the banana plugs, and used the jumper in the speakers.

I'll set them up properly tonight, but initial thoughts are that any music is a total joy to listen to.

  • any music is a total joy to listen to.

That's what its all about mate :-)

  • That's why they were in the bag!

Good work. That is a great little set up for the money.

  • The hilarious bit is I can't get the volume control past 25% without worrying about the neighbours. OVERKILL.

Thanks for everybody's help over the last couple of weeks. That old classic forum fuzzy feel.

  • Biwiring is bollocks, so just use the four bananas.

  • OK, after testing out a few different genres of music, there is no bass, whatsoever. What have I done wrong?

  • tried flipping cable polarity?
