How much was the steerer tube cutting? Need to get that done on my pomp...
-

Lbs charged £20 to give the headset a once over (after my noob attempt at installing it), cut the tube down and put it back together nicely with some spacers I had.

not bad not bad. Gonna do the same methinks. Going at my bike with a hacksaw would end in carnage... should go for inauguration ride with the new builds! pomp+surly=indestructible

Just go buy a pipe cutter from a local hardware store. Minde cost £8 and it hasnt failed on me yet! much cheeper than a LBS!
Also, loose the spacer, slam the stem and get risers!!

So I've been using it daily since it was built, and it hasn't disappointed. however after a few laps of the park (~30km) I realized it wasn't something I could comfortably do 40+k on, which was a problem. So, as @FFF predicted, the current cockpit's going (keep an eye out in classified, or message me) and is gonna be replaced with Easton ergo bars and a pair of SRAM s500 levers. This should allow me to ride it as far as I want, and perhaps lose a few cm's off the headset stack at the same time.

Also s/o to @Motorcity for helping me find decent bars. Couldn't help taking a little inspiration from his awesome build...

@Glanton always proud when my Surly can work as inspiration. Right now it's fighting the snow with wide risers and 37mm studded tyres. It looks like you are going for a great build with those bars and levers. I've done 200k rides with my similar combo and it works fine.
@FFF s build has worked as a great inspiration for me. With what did you replace it? One of my favourite steamrollers around.

thanks @Glanton & @Motorcity for your kindness
replaced it eventually with this
It was okay and I got on with it quite well but still wanted something that suited me better. And disc brakes.

Did 60k around chertsey on Sunday - even with the pursuit bars it was great, but probarbly would've been more comfy on hoods. No unnerving sounds/rattles and hills are a breeze on it. Very pleased.

Hey guys. Quite a lot has happened in the last fortnight. A week and half and two promises "they'd have stock in soon" from shiny bikes resulted in me cancelling my order for the SRAM brakes. I didn't think I'd find anywhere stocking for less than £50~60 (shiny had them for £35). And indeed I didn't for ages, but I stumbled across an Amazon "warehouse deals" listing for a pair of used ones for £21, in like-new condition. They arrived a few days ago and to my surprise were essentially new - miraculously the box hadn't actually been opened.
Also received the bars from Wiggle, and with that I built up the new cockpit. It was a radical change in general ride comfort, and the hoods felt great.
Still got a few tiny things to address (cable ferules, steerer tube etc), and I'm still playing with the fit, but this is pretty near the finished product.

It looks very good! I would personally use the potential of that steerer tube and put the stem on top of the spacer. That wouldnt be very slave though...

Wasn't so keen on the huge headset stack on the previous setup personally, and with these bars the saddle-bar drop is so much less that it's still way more comfortable, even with the steam down another few centimetres. Also, I wanted an a aggressive position, just not a serious lower back problem.

They're just miche express wheels, prebuilt. They're on the heavy side but they run true and have been pretty bombproof so far
Haven't fully worked it out but somewhere in the ballpark of 700. Hadn't fully taken into account labour costs...
