  • Aren't you a student again @StandardPractice... get the discount!
Also I've not found my macs to be durable. I'm now not sure what I'm doing wrong.
On average I've had a major (ie black screen of death) fault every 2 years since 2005. Luckily Applecare is usually pretty good.

  • It's all those garish green and pink and tartan bikes you look at... ruining teh pixels! ;)

  • Lol

    • 15" MacBook Pro with Retina display
    • 2.5GHz i7 processor
    • 16GB RAM
    • 512GB flash storage
    • Iris Pro + Nvidia 750m
    • Superdrive
    • AppleCare
      ...ordered

Should be more than enough for surfing, emailing and some light Potatochopping. Thanks everyone for the insight.

  • Sounds strong. I'm planning to get a base level Mac Pro, my little 2012 air should be fine for when I need to be out & about.

Anyone here got a Pro? Anything I should be aware of? Seems they suffer from the wifi issues sometimes, but it'll be etherneted up so not an issue.

  • Don't forget tumblring too, very important.

Jealous of that spec, that'll feel much faster than your old model.

  • Oh no... you didn't see the updated MBP coming out next month?

Jokes. Good purchase, it should fulfil your needs. I can recommend a thin hardshell snap-on cover for the mac too - I have a matt black one and it barely adds to the dimensions. Useful when sliding the mac into backpacks and other bags regularly.

  • There will be no shell, I want the feel that exquisite aluminium against my skin. There might be a sheath of some sort though...

  • Can't believe what a difference an SSD makes - just stuck a £40 Kingston 120GB SSD in my spare, ageing (2009) 13" Macbook Pro and the difference is night and day. Best £40 I ever spent.

  • I need to go SSD with my home laptop... Are they all much the same as one another?

  • I dunno, I bought the cheapest on Amazon and it works. I vaguely knew the brand, which probably helped.

  • The 500GB Samsung's working out great for me so far...

  • Let me know how that works out for you, I'm torn between one and a retina imac.

  • Will do, but probably won't be bought for another month at least - or basically when some clients cough up. Retina imac is tempting, but I already have a good monitor for my needs, and a mac pro is upgradable. And I'm sure Apple will release a retina monitor in the future, by which point I can spunk a load of money on that.

  • I would really appreciate if anyone can shed some light on an issue i am experiencing, running a 2014 Imac, 8gb ram with 1TB storage, I use photoshop, illustrator, flash and after effects on a daily basis, along with mail and some office programs occasionally and most of my work is being stored via dropbox.

In the last couple of months its been infuriatingly slow, whenever I'm running more than just a browser, sometimes it gets to the point where each click within an app and sometimes finder involves a 10-30 second+ spinning beach ball. I used my macbook air just the other day doing the same work, minus after effects and it all ran super smooth, so i doubt its the type of work i am doing. Its not full, i have 380+ gb free storage. Can anyone suggest how i best go about cleaning it up or what i could try to help fix this slow performance? before i have to back everything up and lose it to apple to look over for a few days.

I swear my old 2005 macbook pro which was still my daily until about a year ago was faster, been using apple for over 12 years and Ive never experienced a machine running like this.. thanks in advance!

  • Sounds curiously like a virus - can't remember where I read it but apparently there was one going around that would cause the machine to progressively slow. May be the cause.

Otherwise I can suggest a full clean install. Right back to a zeroed HD. I can also suggest you check that your RAM is still all there - sometimes it will burn out and your running on 4GB. Also, if you can - get more RAM!

  • Sounds like your disk needs repairing or its getting ready to physically fail.
Run disk utility or onyx if you haven't already, that usually makes a big difference.

@photoben good thinking. I'm not getting either for another 6 months but a pro it is!

  • Plus the pro is due for an update soonish. Either way you can get them in the refurb store now...

  • Thanks!

@TRA Ill do some digging and se if if can find any info on viruses that have been going around, to my knowledge i have never had a virus on any of my other mac machines I've owned previously so other than your suggestion of a clean install, Ive no idea how to get rid of them!

@chrisbmx116 I'm running disk utility now so ill see what it comes back with, though Ive never heard of ONYX

  • "The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK." - doesn't sound so sure of itself

  • Ha.
Do disk, and permissions. Permissions are often messed up after a few months use.
Onyx does loads of things plus cleaning. Very tres bon.
@photoben good info. Have also seen a few on gumtree that look legit too so hopefully be able to pick up a cheap one...

  • @guyfriday If you can, run a full back up now. HArd Drive could be about to shit itself. Even on a new machine they can go bang.

It is an issue i have been noticing. I'm a freelance designer so I'm always using iMacs/Mac Pro's and various other mac comps. The iMacs are generally the slower or have more beach ball moments. I don't know why but it definitely happens. The one I'm on now is a 3.2 GHz with 16GB RAM and running Yosemite and Adobe CC 2014 and in photoshop large brushes are lagging behind - doesn't happen on my lower specced MBP.

Mac Pros are super nice though.
