What's the fattest tire that can fit in this?
-
• #3
Its got 23's on there now. Would have clearance for 25. Not sure if you could go any bigger. I also forgot to mention it is not drilled for a brake front or rear

he was from Feltham and later moved to Slough. 753 certified builder, died in 2008 :(

So the bike is back up for sale. Bitterbuffalo returned it as there was a small dent in the right chain stay that I was not aware of.
I have had this looked at by two bike shops in basingstoke who say it does not affect the structural integrity of the frame especially as it is steel. A photograph of the dent is attached.
I have ridden the bike brakeless for a number of years and have put a long of tension through the rear triangle. I have had no handling issues as a result of this ding.
Price has been dropped to £300 collected from Basingstoke or £310 posted.
If there is no interest I will simply keep the bike as I can't let it go for that little money. The bearings in the hubs have been replaced last week and run as new.

Is that dirt?
-
• #12
Nope its a dent where the paint has flaked off.
-
• #13
Sorry, I mean across the whole chainstay
-
• #14
I'll get it out the box and photograph the whole thing properly. 2 seconds

Sorry its taken a while, the picture above was sent to me by bitter buffalo. He's just ridden the bike and sent it back without washing it.

And you didn't notice that dent?
-
• #17
#anorakalert I'm restoring a Russell frame at the moment.
Out of interest - because I've not see Russell stickers like that before - what is the year of production of this one (stamped ddmmyy normally with two initials next to it of the person who commissioned it)?
You will find it stamped on the underside of the bottom bracket shell and on the fork steerer tube. Cheers.

And, btw, you're selling the whole bike as in the first picture (pedals excluded) ?
-
• #19
Nope. I had the bike built up for as long as i've owned it and have never noticed it.
-

I can't find anything on the bottom bracket shell or on the fork steerer tube. Which is odd. Are the decals not genuine then?
-
• #21
Yeah.

The seat lug is similar to this:
http://www.classiclightweights.co.uk/bikes/russell-gittins-rb.html
which is a Dave Russell.
I think it is a Russell, but someone had it re-painted but couldn't find proper decals?

Looks kinked where the dent in the chainstay is, or is that just a cruel illusion?
-
• #24
The top down photo is the best way to capture the chain stay. Does appear slightly kinked.

Thanks mate, you obviously know more about the builder than me. Puts my mind at ease knowing its not just a copy. I did think it was strange that there was no markings on bb.
If the decals aren't correct I might strip it and restore the frame. I was only hanging onto the original paintwork for authenticity.
I've gone full circle again recently and have accumulated too many bikes for the storage I have. So with regret Im selling my Dave Russell bike.
It is a 56cm custom made frame by Dave Russell which is made of reynolds 531. Even though the frame is dated, the geometry was well ahead of its time, with quite a short wheelbase. (I'll upload measurements if people are interested)
The forks don't appear to have any particular branding and are made of steel.
Thomson elite seat post
Ritchey stream 2 saddle
Black sheep stem
Gran comp shallow drop handlebars
