  • Like BRM said use the canals and the river, all are close by to all 3 sites.

Yeah but the problem is none are right next to the sites, so this sort of solution would mean double or triple handling the material which then has massive cost implecations.

The trucks might not be that bad since they will be carting along set routes from 3 sites, rather than from all over the city.

  • There are already quite a few trucks driving around soho (one of the cross rail locations) due to the water mains replacement and what not. They drive around the heavily pedestrian filled one way streets like fucking maniacs. I couldn't care less if it cost them more, but I would care if there were more of those idiots on the road.

That doesn't really matter that much--what matters is that cyclists won't have set routes. It's the number and volume of vehicular traffic, particular HGVs from the construction industry, that causes people to come to harm. Fingers crossed that other factors will mean a continuing reduction in casualties, but care needs to be taken around every major construction project.

  • east london flooded with cross rail lorries at the moment !

  • and adding to road danger (particularly for us cyclists).

  • The Tories seem to be trying to suggest to people that it's business as usual with all sorts of announcements, but I still think Crossrail 2 (in a similar way to Crossrail 1) is a huge mistake, not just for London but for the whole country:

    https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2017/jul/24/transport-secretary-backs-crossrail-2-plan

As has been noted by many people, this announcement comes quite close in time to the abandonment of rail electrification plans in the North.

The theme of this thread is a reminder of what we can expect to happen for London traffic if it ends up being built.

  • Investment in London and investment elsewhere shouldn't be either or - no need to set it up as a false dichotomy.

  • ^ so much this. The 'northern powerhouse' rhetoric disappeared quickly didn't it...

  • Pah, I spit on your 200 hgvs a day, and raise you 750-800 per day for Ruislip,
as the Ealing Northolt tunnel for HS2 starts construction.
Yep, Ruislip with its barely improved Victorian farm track-based road system.

And we are being expected to be grateful, as the intial estimates were 1500 hgv movements per day.
