Cleaning and lubing

  • Just got an old 60's CB track frame and its a bit grubby, old grease n oil mainly.
Don't want to damage the old paint so is there a magic solution I should use..?

    Ta...

  • Soap and water's probably a good place to start

  • ^ yep. Washing up liquid is fine as long as you wash it off really well. Then if you like, t-cut and tutle wax to bring it up to a shine.

  • Yep as above really dude...

Rinse the frame with water and then spray muc-off/washing up liquid over it. Leave it for 3 mins to soak in. Then, using a soft brush, scrub the whole frame, getting into all the hard-to-reach bits.

Rinse off again with water and the frame should be clean. If not, repeat and leave stuff to soak for longer.

Paint is pretty hardy and a bit of a brush will be fine.

Buy a silicon lubricant to spray and polish the bike with. I think Muc-off do the stuff.

  • the coolest look this week is the 'rust rocket' look,
you have to leave the stripped frame outdoors for two years to achieve it, then build up with full Campy Record groupset, giving the distressed look with bling contrast. So hard to get, but so desirable.

  • Thank you gentle people...

  • What's the best way of getting chrome shining like new and paint, etc....

  • Use cleaning products, etc...

  • Elbow grease.

Available from your LBS in litre tins.

  • I hear tinfoil is good for polishing up chrome without scratching it. Will probably need some of the above to go with it though.

  • Is that Muc-Off box set any good?

Is there any reason to use Muc-Off instead of washing up liquid or car/truck cleaner?

  • I'm sure it works fine, but no.

  • The best bike cleaner known to science is a make-up removal wipe. They are utterly fantastic and cheaper than if they said "bike" on them. My better half and daughters were delighted when I made this discovery.

  • I use wet wipes for trickier/dirtier areas on the bike, if I have time. This was more for the Kinesis though, which is more typically just in need of removing a couple of kilos of dirt and finding things like deraillers again.

Chain sounded terrible today and shifting off a bit. Think the chain needs a clean and lube and the derailler pivots need some attention.

  • Anyone used that Extreme Fluoro stuff from Finish Lineon their derailler pivots?

I want to blast them down with degreaser and try lubing them 'in place' without having to pull them down and remove the tension springs from within.. as per..

  • I reckon the make up ones are essentially degreaser

  • Cleaned the chain yesterday. Didn't relube it. Cleaned the jockey wheels this morning and spotted a stiff link so fixed that. Then doused the derailler with that red can of stuff you get everywhere (not coke, the spray lube/degreaser/water repellent/whatever). Everything was tickety boo this morning.

I wonder what the wear rate of a chain is lubed vs. unlubed?

  • I wonder what the wear rate of a chain is lubed vs. unlubed?

    Some "light" reading...

  • Just give me the numbers you bastardo! :P

  • (Sound of many cyclists wincing)

I predict chain will commence chirping in 3, 2, 1...

  • tl/dr: lubed = :), unlubed = :(

    Hope this helps...

  • It only has to stay quiet for today and tonight I'll give the chainset a proper clean and relube. I just couldn't be arsed yesterday - after spending all day in the cold on the bike the last thing I want to do is stand around in the cold, cleaning everything on it. It was lucky to get a wash at all.

  • Really?

I wonder if a chain left covered in oil and road grit wouldn't wear faster than one free of oil and grit? I guess it depends but on the Kinesis I could go weeks or months without cleaning the chain.

  • A dry chains wear out a lots quicker than a gunked chains, least that what I notice from customer's bike.
