  • I thought the Alpina's were cheap for full carbon, about £50 more than the NItto's. They are great but not as strong, for standing starts they are better, normal riding or posing then the Nittos are fine.

  • The Nittos are all over ebay for about £30-35. I've been racing them since 1989, so that should give you an idea of their calibre.

  • Alpinas are nice but crazy $$$

  • Brick lane bikes do 36cm track bars. £30 I think

I think they're cheap, need 'em when producing 2000+ Watts for standing starts :)

  • I love my Alpinas in 33cm. They don't even feel that small. I 100% recommend them

  • I use a Nitto 38cm have a 35cm and 34cm great once rolling a bit tricky standing start.

  • That's core strength and technique.

  • Just bumping this - I assume narrow bars are still recommended for track use?
I have fairly narrow shoulders relative to my height anyway, and going to check these out in 36/38 http://www.cyclesurgery.com/bontrager-race-vr-s-handlebar/road-bike-bars/bikes-components-bikewear/fcp-product/53750?listing=true
although if 38 is okay I will probably grab the PX ones listed ^^^^^^^^^^

  • Mmmmm, kinda.

I'm seeing a lot of the sprinters that rushed out and bought 33cm Alpinas move back to wider bars now.

38s should be right on trend ;)

  • I guess there is a massive difference between Chris Hoy saying 'you see the difference between a sprint with elbows out, and elbows in, and think I've got to work on that', and actually being able to develop that power and deliver it to the wheel in the first place!

  • I use 40cm ITM bars for training at HH, but have 37cm Scatto's too. I initially thought about going for the 33cm versions, but got put off after comments about the 37cm feeling too narrow, especially if you haven't used anything under 40cm before.

The 37cm bars feel good at speed, but I'd only plan on using them for short sprint events now.

But when all you do is squat massive weights and you have no idea how to pedal a bike then someone telling you that spending £??? on handlebars will make you a faster sprinter is a dream come true!

  • the mechanics of pedaling a bike quickly are really not that complicated. Any co-ordinated, fit person can learn to do it well in quite a short amount of time.

  • You'd think.

  • ^ You'd think not if you saw my local velodrome on a Saturday morning...

Real sprinters or those that still ride endurance events and sprint for 'fun'?

My point exactly, I work in a velodrome.

    Real sprinters.

Enduros don't sprint for fun, they do it coz they think they can do it better than real sprinters.

  • Anyone know of any sprint bars, similar to the scatto's in shape and drop, but without the price tag?

  • 2nd hand Scatto's...

I think the shallow drop similar to Pro Vibe 7s. I've used both, but not one after the other. I'm sure they would measure up similarly. The Pro's are stiff, but the Scatto's are the stiffest I've ever used, great for sprinting.

  • Pro's are only available in 40cm and 42cm - too wide really and also can't find any info on the drop/reach (come on Shimano...). I've been using shallow road bars up til now (deda newtons) which have been quite stiff, but I'm forever banging my wrists on them when sprinting or doing starts.

Nitto make a bar which has 150mm drop, which will probably be stronger than the Pro's, and available in narrower widths.. but ideally I would want something a little shallower.

  • With sprint bars you are limited to scatto or alpina pretty much. The only other bars I have seen like the scatto are made by BT. Can recommend the Alpina's, I know they are deeper than what you want but think of the aero gains.

  • 38cm is not narrow

These come at 350mm width and 117mm drop, want!!
