  • I'm not around Saturday but collection on Sunday would be fine

  • ^^^^ sounds like fun. I have LS3/5a and LS5/9 speakers. I recommend Mark Hennessey's website.

  • U has LS3/5A?!
Sweet. Do they live up to they hyperbole?

  • OK so after using my Audio Technicas for a month I'm blown away!

Using them with Fiio e07k amp on the PC and my ipod.

Now it has me hankering for a decent speaker set up. Am I better going down the AV route so I can use through the blu ray player too?

Or is stero a better choice?

    I'm completely new to this!

  • stereo, you need to spend far far more on surround to get the same level of quality, not to mention that a lot of films (unless you exclusively watch big budget action) barely make use of the additional channels.
Most blu-ray players have the ability to downmix to stereo.

  • i'm pretty sure you could come up with an amazing av/surround set-up with with a shitload of money/practice/luck, but i reckon a two channel hi-fi set would be ten times easier than trying to get it right with an off the shelf package or fiddling around trying to match up 3 sets of speakers

there will be ,mountains of evidence against me, but i will put my set-up against any john lewis 5.1

  • 5.1 is fun though.

  • Personally I quite like my surround sound (although I do watch a decent amount of big budget, explosiony stuff).

If you're starting from scratch it's not too difficult to buy matched speakers and most AV amps have a plug in mic to allow easy set up. Saying that though, my room is fairly rectangular with the tv at one end and the sofa facing it at the other and all the wiring hidden when I did the floor. If I was fitting it retrospectively into a weird shaped room I may be less keen.

  • Soundbars....
    (not the shit ones...)

  • I've sacked off all ideas of surround based on everyone's advice and I'm now trying to pick up some 2nd hand Tannoy Mercury M3s or Revolutions, some sort of Cambridge Audio amp and a CD player of some description - probably CA again to match the amp. Looking to spend about £150-£180 and I think I can get everything in that budget. Is that a good plan?

  • Yeah I think it is do able.

Amp and CD player would be advisable to keep an eye on Ebay and collection only slightly out of London to get bargains.

  • i still have that CD player for you, if you want...

  • gimme a call - i have plenty of good stuff i'm about to shift that is in your budget...

  • Also look at Arcam.

  • CD player?

    What sort of time?

  • any time. you've got ny number, i think?

  • I've got an old pioneer cd player, that needs repairing, and an old sony mini disc player that also needs repairing, I don't mind stumping up the cash to repair the mini disc player, still have old discs I can play on it. So anyone want to take a non working pioneer pds-501 off my hands..

  • They are very nice little speakers. Very clear and detailed, but the treble can sometimes sound a little "papery" which I guess may be some sort of HF peak or resonance. Over-priced though, really. Better than any LS3/5a (I've used many) are the modern Harbeth replacements. They are just excellent.

  • i have one of these, corny

  • mine has more buttons: i win.

  • Thanks guys

So I guess all I would need is an amp - preferably something with a remote. Then a optical out converter to connect up my stereo amp to the xbox?

  • Picking up some Q-Acoustics 2020i's tonight after reading many positive reviews. Happiness.

  • I've got the concept 20's. They're stunning.
