my commute is a 500m walk to work
Somewhat obviously, you should wear a walking helmet.

Or alternatively some walking training?

No dents, I'll keep hold of it then. It's only 2 years old.

I stacked it last week, going round a roundabout, and slipping out on diesely/salty slime on the roads. My shoulder took the brunt of the impact, but in the process, I broke my helmet.
I'm therefore shopping for a new one, but I've got no idea what to go for. There seems to be a vast range in price from £15 to £150, but the weird thing is that the expensive ones don't seem to offer any more protection than the cheap ones. They all conform to EN1078, so what's the advantage of the more expensive ones? You would have thought that the more expensive ones would have some kind of claim of better protection, but the opposite seems to be true, as they've got more holes in them than the cheaper ones.
My head diameter is about 58cm. What should I spend, and what should I buy? Confused.com

I believe that the pricier ones are lighter and can have better ventilation. But some don't, they just give you more pro pointz and a lighter wallet.

If you want serious protection, get a motorcycle helmet.

Someone on my commute (usually seen around in the evening going along the New King's Road in Parson's Green) wears a full face BMX helmet whilst riding his Dawes Galaxy. Also pulls away from a stop in the lowest gear but stays in that gear with legs spinning away at 120rpm+ for much longer than can be comfortable.
Each to their own I guess.

@Rhodrich the bicycle helmet test is basically a 12mph impact on the crown of the head/helmet with a large blunt object. Either the helmet stays still and they drop a metal thing towards it or they have a metal block and drop the helmet towards it. Similar to the motorbike test here but just the 1 drop and the helmet doesn't need to retain shape/function/anything so long as it doesn't register more than a set amount of Gs impact. The 2nd drop, penetration test, roll off test and all the other tests are just for motorbikes. They do test the strap clips somehow too but it's just so the helmet won't unclip and fall off under "cycling conditions" so all the tests to motorbike straps should be ignored too. Here is some youtube on helmet tests at bell, dig about and you can find some bicycle helmet test videos but it's a million miles apart imo.

With bicycle helmets after £30-50 you get into helmets that are more expensive as they offer a sporting edge so a few grams lighter, a little more aero and so on.

Nonsense, helmets is well tuff.
Helmets make you SAFE! I know someone what wuz run over by a lorry, it went straight over their head and helmet and he was not hurt at all. its totes amazers you know that polystyrene stuff used to pack tv's which falls apart when you pull the telly from its box, it does not crumble or crack at all when many tons of lorry crashes into it. i am surprised we don't all wear helmets all the time, i am sure we would all live for ever, as they can protect you from AIDS and everyfink.

Hard evidence from an MP, no less, that safety on bicycle is nothing to do with helmets (not a single mention all article), it is all about a "good, strong, solid bike with a heavy frame."
The chain, cogs and gears were crushed against the frame, but Mrs Milton said: "My bike saved me.
“It just goes to show - get a good, strong, solid bike with a heavy frame. It did save me.
“I fell on my left side so the bike fell on top of me and he drove up a bit on top of the bike.
“The pedal kept the bike off me.” -

California legislator introduces bill to mandate helmets, and high-viz after dark. Would be the first state to adopt such law for adults.

I'm not defending my title if I have to wear hi-viz. It was annoying enough having to sticker the bike.

When will they make bullet proof vests compulsory in the USA? Obvs easier to make potential victims protect themselves than to stop crimes happening.
Basic road/MTB hats are £30 or less, hardly worth trying to eke out. I don't even ride much and the foam/fabric liners have had enough after a few years. If I were commuting every day I'd see helmets as an annual replacement item like chains and cassettes
