Personally I quite like my surround sound (although I do watch a decent amount of big budget, explosiony stuff).
If you're starting from scratch it's not too difficult to buy matched speakers and most AV amps have a plug in mic to allow easy set up. Saying that though, my room is fairly rectangular with the tv at one end and the sofa facing it at the other and all the wiring hidden when I did the floor. If I was fitting it retrospectively into a weird shaped room I may be less keen.
