Octalink V1 BB Options

I've managed to score some NOS DA 7700 cranks, but after some reading I've found that the BB-7700 requires a lot of maintenance, due to unsealed bearings. I ride my bike through pretty much all weather, and so ideally would like something a little more robust

Are the 7710 and Ultegra 6500 my only 2 options? If so, which should I go for? If not, what else is there?

  • ISTR getting a 105 v1 octalink BB as a replacement for the original DA a few years ago. It was a sealed unit type BB. Not sure if they still make it.

  • The 7700 version may not have the NJS standard sealed bearings of the 7710, but I've run a variety of 105, 6500 and 7700 Octalink v1 bottom brackets over the years without maintenance problems. They're still available on ebay, but the 105 version is the only one I've met in the LBS.

  • Thanks for your replies.

@Ludd did you notice any measurable difference in performance between them?

Not NJS stamped, nor displayed as a 7710 - but will this do the job?

  • Sorry to be slow in replying. To be honest I've not noticed the difference in terms of performance. The main difference I've noticed is the weight - the DA version is much much lighter.

I'm not a weight weenie (I'm too fat) but there are enough second hand DA versions around to be able to pick up a bargain, and there's a nerdy satisfaction in knowing you've got an excellent bb that nobody can see.

I think the unsealed track version you've linked may not enjoy being out in all weathers.

  • 5500 bb are available so are the 7700 but the 6500 are no longer made.
