Rose Xeon RS - Budget Weight Weenie Alu build

  • Got the frame quite recently.
    It was cheap!

But hey. I'm going to see how light I can get this machine for under £1k.
Main goal is to beat everyone at Catford CC hill climb, and fly up every fuckin' hill.

    Here's the frame though.

So far, I've got Deda zero100 finishing kit, chinese crabon seatpost for silly cheap quite a while ago. Got a Chris King PF24 BB just because i'm quite weary of regular replacing which would ultimately wear out the BB shell inside...
I've decided to go 11 speed mix of shimano 105/ ultegra. SRAM Red brakes though, shaves off a good 20g or so :)

Wheelbuild will be custom - thinking bikehubstore/ kinlin XR200s or XR19W, sapim lasers? Anyone used these rims? Any other suggestions for a sub 400g clincher rim? Target weight of wheels around 1200g. I can - I'm a teeny 56kg.

Need chainset opshunz. Best bang for buck/ cost-weight with PF24 for 11 speed? Can one even run 10 speed rings with 11 speed chain? Heard mixed things.

  • Nice!
    GLWB.
Like my Xeon, a few on here now.

  • i have a 2013' xeon rs-4400, size 61, 7.34kg with pedals

  • sweet frame! keen to see how this turns out

  • Subscribed! ;)

  • I have used Kinlin XR200 on BHS hubs; all good; I'd still go Novatec SL for reliability, service parts etc. The weight penalty isnt much. At your weight you can easily pull off 20/24h. My current XR200 wheelset is with Novatec SL hubs, CX rays (24/28) and with cassette, tyres, tubes and QR is 2400g. Ultegra cassette, Mavic Tyres, Latex tubes, FFWD QR.

Swap to kalloy UNO stem they are just £15 new.

The best 24mm axle crankset is DA9000. If thats too pricey just stick to 6800. If you are planning to get a powermeter that is not stages then Rotor 3D with CT2 chainrings.

  • Slight Hijack

These? Can the the logos be acetoned off? Is there a similarly cheap and light inline black seatpost?

  • Yep I use them with acetoned graphics ..
Gub CNC post on ebay is pretty decent .. sadly no good layback option.

  • Just bin it an get a Cannondale.

  • @noiser: as i bought it complete via rose there's no specific cp thread, i only posted it once in the misc cp-thread. this is how i bought it:

meanwhile the bike has 2 bottle holders, a different stem and a different seat post and also a garmin mount by barfly. should do a picture of it soon.

  • Cheers for advice @amey, good call on the Kalloy Uno. Think I'll look into that.
I think i'm also looking at the Dura Ace 9000 C24 wheels too.
@Eingang sweet ride, what's the weight of that machine as it stands?
Now also thinking of even getting SRAM Force levers and mechs which would shave 200g+
    Ah options, options.....

  • if i'm remembering right the weight incl pedals was between 7.3 and 7.4 with the current set-up,

  • Shouldn't have any issue running 10 speed rings with 11 speed rear end.

People will probably tell you that you can't, but I've seen some absolutely ridiculous drivetrain combinations work to exceptional effect.

  • The brakes and chainset (and cables) are probably the best thing about the new Shimano groups.

I'd just go 5800 and use a posh cassette for racing.

And some silly wheels laced 2:1.
