In addition to the reasons you cited, another is vasoconstriction, the constricting of blood vessels in cold weather. Cycling Weekly recently ran an article about cold weather riding and quoted to Dr. Mark Garcia, who noted, “your heart will be working very hard to pump the blood round your body due to this increased vascular resistance and the subsequent increase in blood pressure. The knock-on effect is fatigue.”
...and that blood is thicker (but not in a positive, Katusha way).
should be quicker...
Probably, unless you're riding with more fatigue? That or someone's put water in your tubes or you're wearing a particularly un-aero facial expression.

As excuses go ^ that one is certainly statistically rigorous.

Only the best excuses will do for me. No fucking about with "oh I ate too many mince pies", it's the Earth's damn fault!

Guys...

It's all bullshit anyway. Birmingham isn't the centre of the UK (or even England)...

whats going on in March - did the sample give up energy gels for Lent?

Early Saturday Kent was icy. We rode the A21 & other friendly big roads. Early a.m. lots of riders heading back towards Central London shouting "ice ahead." On the way back in massive numbers of riders heading out mid dayish. Plenty of riding out there for the cautious.

One of them was probably me!
I went out over cudham, got to the top of toys hill and then started seeing ice. Still managed a very slow-mo icy spill nonetheless. Got pissed off and went home.
I thought that the relatively mild Friday night and early morning 2-3 degrees would have prevented ice, but obviously not! Turbo today. CBA with risking it again.

First ride out on the new bike, good bit of speed work in there. Nice recovery milkshake in the ice cream parlour as well. Nice weather for it this weekend. Still feeling it in my shoulders, sunday spent shopping for a longer stem.

My seat collar clamp decided that it'd had enough of being in a single piece and broke in two, thank you Hope. Hilly, windy 68 mile solo ride back home out of the saddle the entire way! When I got back I couldn't decide whether it was my legs, back, arms or hands that were in the most pain. Probably hands.

That is savage. Must have been feckin horrible! Why not just ride to a train station?
-
• #8499
You sure strained some parts of your body by doing such an effort - be gentle on yourself on the next ride.

Sun: A few quite slow, quite cold lonesome hours in the Chilterns
Exactly as hippy said, it's winter, it's hard to go as fast as you normally do in the summer.
