  • Thinking of changing to 650b on my kona dr.dew to get a bit more traction in the snow. If the frame can fit 700x35 tyres with mudguards and room to spare what are the odds of getting 650x57 winter tyres in there? Its a p2 fork on the front so plenty wide but I'm not sure how the rear would work out .Seems like @edscoble is the one to ask.

  • I take it you don't have any 650b wheels lying around to test? In which case, grab a ruler and measure the clearance where they would sit, should give you a pretty good idea...

Running different tyre and pressure would make a good difference, if you haven't already, dropping it to 35psi will give you a surprising amount of grip.

Listen to @andy_k's advice, also if you have a LBS that have the latest stuff that you're friendly with, you can ask them to put a 27.5" MTB wheel on the rear to see how it is.

    In theory it should work fine, @mi7rennie's Genesis Croix de Fer have just about enough (read - not enough mud clearance) for 27.5 x 2.1 tyres;

  • I swapped to a Panaracer 27.5 x 2.0" for extra clearance, fine for road and hard pack trails and paths but for more mixed terrain I plan on removing PDW guards and just using a beaver tail mtb rear guard and a little crud catcher mylar front guard.

  • Yeah I'm running these in 35c at minimum psi already but it just doesn't cut it when there's been a fresh dump of snow overnight and the roads haven't been cleared. I'll prob drop by the mtb shop I used to work in and see if I can borrow a pair of wheels, didn't think of that thanks!

  • 2015 Jamis Aurora Elite...

Opinions? I've got one coming in for a trial soon. Thinking it'd be nice with a little front rack and one of those plastic Royal Mail tubs the size of a shoebox on t'front.

  • They're decent tourer for the money, especially for the wheelset, frameset won't be as good as your old Thorn.

  • Just read more about it, actually fantastic value for the specification, only thing that I'm uncertain of is the cable housing not being compressionless to take advantage of the brakes.

  • I'm getting that rack soon to complete my Elephant.

Clearance look much nicer with a normal fork length too.

  • Do those Topeak pump really need a strap to hold it on? kinda defeat the purpose of a pump peg.

  • That elephant is awesome! Loving the colour. Who's next in line on the forum to obtain one of these beauty's ?

  • Possible posted before? Clever solution to no guard mounts on fork

  • Pretty standard bodge there, the quick release mounted options look a lot tidier.

  • 'preciated

  • 's nice. rl nice. (shuffles hand in pocket whilst leering)

  • Installed SKS longboards; tis done! Fun and functional.

  • Love this. What's the details?

  • Steel SSMTB. The functional bits are: no-brand black plastic 60 mm mudguards (front is a rear cut short and mounted with DIY bracket to lower it), Schwalbe Rocket Ron's (2.1"), front alu platform carrier which in that picture is carrying my bag (I guess you would call it a satchel) and a lock strapped down with bungee cords.

  • This is awesome! Think I have to light up my road bike with some colourful tape come spring.

  • It's a PITA replacing a tube with qr mounted anything though. You have to slide the skewer right out and the thread catches etc.
