They're more elastic, i.e. more flexible which mean less risk of puncture.
It only work best with high end tyres IMHO.

You suggested using a lightweight tube such as Schwalbe XXLight and my point is that to make a butyl tube lighter, they are made thinner: ie even less puncture resistant.
