Thinking of changing to 650b on my kona dr.dew to get a bit more traction in the snow.
Running different tyre and pressure would make a good difference, if you haven't already, dropping it to 35psi will give you a surprising amount of grip.
Listen to @andy_k's advice, also if you have a LBS that have the latest stuff that you're friendly with, you can ask them to put a 27.5" MTB wheel on the rear to see how it is.
In theory it should work fine, @mi7rennie's Genesis Croix de Fer have just about enough (read - not enough mud clearance) for 27.5 x 2.1 tyres;

If the frame can fit 700x35 tyres with mudguards and room to spare what are the odds of getting 650x57 winter tyres in there? Its a p2 fork on the front so plenty wide but I'm not sure how the rear would work out .Seems like @edscoble is the one to ask.
