  • @emyr I am not going to defend the square taper unreservedly (most bicycles of the past had cottered cranks anyway). The square taper has its issues but I would like to know what you think is better? E.g. I have found to my cost that Hollowtech 2 outboard BB bearings are short lived if you use them year round. The UN55 square taper BBs on a couple of my bikes have done 3 times the mileage taht those last and are as smooth as ever.

@Khornight2 I made an assumption that the Nexus 7 needed an expensive special tool for removing the RH cone like the N8/Alfine 8 do, thought I had read it somewhere but I was wrong. Mind you if that N7 is corroded it will not last overly long once reassembled, had this with my previous N8.

Found a chart of efficiency of hubs on the net (bottom of page): http://www.bentrideronline.com/messageboard/showthread.php?s=fcd7890c0dbe2017b7bf740484ed2ab7&t=96470&page=2 which I don't think proves much either way...

EDIT: are the 3 speed hubs you have grease lubed? If so you might have a different experience with an older oil lubed SA hub.
